Well - THAT was a very intersting thread indeed.
I was very excited to begin reading the thread
after being out of town for 4 days and seeing
lots of replies. Anyway - I'm still amazed that
everytime this type of discussion is brought up
everyone (almost) seems to focus in on the mpg.
I told Ford last week that I didn't care about
the mpg if it had the power it is supposed to.
But, Dave and I seem to have both low power/mpg
and it's almost surely related. If not - we're
still down on power. For instance, if I nail it
on the highway at 65 it takes over 10 seconds to
pickup 10 miles per hour. Pulling - well, hell I
can't even pull a 9k load. Locked in 3rd gear,
it still slows down on highway grades. That is
my major problem - and if fixing the power
problem fixes the mpg also - good. If not, I can
live with lower mpg than normal. Something is
definetly wrong though - I have a little over 2k
miles on it and get 6 mpg pulling a 3k trailor on
the highway in Texas (no hills!). I just think
it's low mpg because it has no power.
What I'm doing is going thru HELL trying to get
Ford to ACTUALLY work on the engine to see what's
wrong. They still think 'cause their computer
says everything is okelydokely than that's that.
Maybe I need to rough 'em up a bit, eh?

ps to Jason - Please bear with us here - maybe
we're just going thru growing pains. The board
is really growing - It's really getting better
all the time. More neat-o stuff like that
article from a member here and the navistar dude
will be great. As always thanks to all who
continue to offer help.

-Folks,
-
-Just picked up a new '97 F350 CC PSD, E4OD, 4x4,
-4.10 gears. Sadly, it seems to both have less
power
-and get poorer mileage than my '94 F250 SC IDI
-factory turbodiesel (w/ aftermarket turbine
housing
-& exhaust), 4x4, E4OD, 4.10.
-
-On other PSDs that I've driven, when tromping
from
-a standing start, you can see the engine rev to
the
-torque converter's stall speed, and then, over a
-half second or so, feel the boost come on, via
the
-seat of your pants, with a nice satisfying rush.
-This one is much less distinguished in its
coming
-onto the boost.
-
-I don't hear any kind of rushing air sound, so I
-don't think that the exhaust butterfly is
sticking
-shut.
-
-At about 175 miles, took it out solo, with an
empty
-bed, for about 200 miles, out and back, on
terrain
-that gains elevation (1-2000 feet) fairly
smoothly
-over the hundred mile radius, starting pretty
near
-sea level. I got what I consider to be a
miserable
-16.1 MPG, having filled the tank to the brim
both
-before and after the run.
-
-On some steeper hills around here, it would
barely
-pull beyond 70 MPH, taking 5-10 seconds to gain
-each additional 1 MPH. My recollection of my IDI
is
-that it accelerated in that situation at least
-twice as fast.
-
-So, my questions to y'all are: Is this typical
-performance? Anybody else disappointed? Any
-suspicions as to what's up? How much improvement
-can I expect as the engine breaks in, and how
long
-will that be?
-
-TIA,
-Dave
