Hi all
What is Nav. extender oil filter technology?
I have seen and used, FL-1995, Purolator 44872, and
Fleetguard long filters all seemed to be the same.
Never seen Navistar version it is not available in
Europe.
Some of you have stated that oil cooling is the
only reason of the extended (8000 miles) interval.
If you are in the winter season don't you think
that you can get the extra cooling because of the
cold? I do have an aux oil cooler too installed by
Ford on my 95 E-350. 3 quart difference is not so
much. Maybe during summertime it is. I planned to
carry heavy loads (this is a work truck) so I have
ordered the max cooling pack that was possible on
everything.
Now I am out of the warranty (110K) so I change the
oil myself. It seems the oil is still semi-
transparent after 5000 miles and viscosity is still
high.
Btw highway milage is: 14-15Mpg w/auto w/14" cube
box w/ trailer GCVR: 16000 lbs speed is 55Mph
during 900 miles half flat half hilly.
Almost always (90%) travelled with this config
never had a tranny problem.

-----
-----Howdy Janos!
-----
-----I'd say there are two factors enabling
-Navistar's
-----longer oil change intervals.
-----
-----1. Higher oil capacity. The T444E holds 17
---quarts
-----vs. the 14 in the PowerStroke version of the
-----engine. The difference probably results from
--Ford
-----using a smaller oil pan to fit within the
--confines
-----of the F & E-series vehicles. Since diesels
are
-----epsecially prone to soot accumulation in the
oil
-----(and the resulting wear that can occur), the
---higher
-----capacity of oil translates in the ability to
-hold
-----more soot in suspension before a change is
-----necessary.
-----
-----2. The Extender filter technology. Now, I'm
-not
-----exactly sure how Navistar makes and/or specs
the
-----Extender filters, but the 8,000 mile interval
is
-----always footnoted as requiring the Extender
---filters.
-----I'd say they're at least partially synthetic
-with
-----the ability to trap finer dirt & wear
particles.
-----

-----Jay
