How to "Dimple" the Firewall

Howdy All!
I'm helping a friend install his Hypermax 3in turbo
downpipe, and while the reciprocating saw made
short work of the stock downpipe, we're left
scratching our heads as to how to gain enough
clearance to install the new pipe.
The directions note to "dimple" the firewall, but
the firewall seems pretty sturdy and there's not
enough room back there (or from underneath) to
simply "whack" at it with a hammer or baby sledge.
So, the question is, to those who have installed
new discharge pipes, how did you gain enough
clearance?
BTW, if someone answers that they dropped the
tranny a bit, please provide the details for the 5-
speed as neither of us has a service manual
(although we've got the jack & tools to do it) and
there are more than a few bolts holding that rear
tranny support up there. It's hard to tell which
ones to loosen to simply drop the tranny a little.
Anyway, thanx for the help.
Best Regards,
Jay
