[Thread Backward] Re: Turbo cool downMsg # 5145 of 8004 on Powerstroke Diesel Conference (1)To: Brad, From: Jim Time: Wednesday 01-28-98, 12:39 pm It really depends on the grade of road during those 5 miles. Lately, It has been 15-20 degf on my 8 mile trip to work. On the way up, it is mostly up hill. The 5th thru 7th miles being the steepest. Pyrometer measures about 900 degF when I crest the hill. I drive about 1/4 mile and pull-over to drop one of the kids off at day-care. While there I let the engine run (very low-crime neighborhood!), and it drops down to about 300. I'm usually there 2-5 minutes. Drive the rest of the way to work, and it heats up around 350 (flat terrain). On the way home, it is about 30 outside, and the truck never really gets hotter than 300 degF. Of course, there is hardly any load on the engine going home. If you are driving flat miles on the way to work, I would bet that you have pretty much cooled back down. Put any sort of load on the engine, hill or towing, and that will change things. It is a shame that Ford didn't put on outlet on the downpipe for a pyrometer. They are really useful on turbo's.
