Odometer Accuracy

All,
Since the speedometer and presumably the odometer
work off of the same sensor: 
If the speedometer is accurate then is odometer
just as accurate???  
It is easy for me to check the accuracy of the
speedo and I want to know the accuracy of my
odometer for mpg testing, etc.
