-Howdy All!
-
-Well, I've been getting really frustrated and
-thought I might solicit some advice.
-
-The Truck: 97 F350 Crew Cab 4x4 5-speed/3.54's
-25,xxx miles
-
-The Problem: A few oil leaks -- see below for
-detail.
-
-History: At around 9,000 miles, I noticed a little
-bit of oil hanging off the two fuel lines at the
-driver's-side front of the engine. There was
-enough oil on the front engine cross-member to gunk
-it up pretty good, but nothing ever hit the garage
-floor.
-
-The first service attempt the tightened some oil-
-galley bolts, ran it a a couple of miles, and
-pronounced it fixed. Yeah, right. By the time I
-got it home (about 35 miles), oil was on the two
-fuel lines.
-
-Second service: more oil bolt tightening, with the
-same result.
-
-Third Service: They can't tell where it's coming
-from, so the put some "tracer dye" in the oil.
-BTW, this scared the sh*t out of me when I changed
-the oil as it gave the oil a greenish tint, and
-that made me green thinking coolant was getting in
-there. Anyway, they wanted me to bring it back
-when it leaked again. This I did one day, and the
-diesel mechanic (a pretty knowledgeable guy),
-crawled underneath and said it looked like the
-block-mounted oil cooler was leaking.
-
-Fourth Service: Replace seals and/or oil cooler
-(hard to tell since they never got me a full copy
-of the shop order). Oil leak still present.
-
-Fifth Service (about 2 weeks ago): I drop it off
-on Wednesday & tell them I need it by Thurs
-evening. I called Weds. afternoon to check on it,
-and they guarantee they'll have it for me tomorrow.
-I call on Thurs, and find out they are replacing
-the seal on the front cover of the engine. So I go
-down to take a look, and there's my engine hooked
-up the hoist, half pulled out of the truck & more
-parts sitting on the bench then under the hood.
-Sure enough, front seal looks like hell. They hope
-to have it on Friday. Call on Friday. Well, they
-found another bad seal and had to remove the oil
-pan -- that means the engine has to be removed.
-Went down and looked at it -- there's a huge engine
-sitting in front of my truck & none in it!
-
-So, on the following Tuesday, they get it all
-buttoned back up & I pick it up that evening.
-First problem is that the exhaust back-pressue
-device won't quit for 45 minutes, and the check
-engine light keeps coming on -- I'm about mad
-enough that I can't see straight! OK, I calm down,
-go home, work out & take it out the next day.
-Things seem to settle down & I figure the computer
-was just relearning things. But, what's this?
-We've still got the oil leak in the same spot,
-although there's less of a flow? And now there's a
-bunch of oil in the valley between the cylinder
-banks that seems to be coming from the bottom of
-the turbo?
-
-Now, you all can see why I'm a bit of frustrated.
-I'm considering the lemon law, but I love this
-truck & don't want a new model year truck as a
-replacement. I'm not real keen on the dealer
-cracking it back open, and I've got a bad feeling
-that the oil leak from the turbo is damaging that
-unit. I'm thinking I'd like to request a new
-engine, but don't know how Ford works in those
-situations. Who should I bitch to? The diesel
-mechanic is pretty knowledgeable & forthright, but
-the service manager just recently learned of the
FW-
-15 additive -- and this dealership sells almost
-exclusively F250HD/F350's. Scary!
-
-Any suggestions? I'm not putting my truck down,
-but I'd give anything for the simplicity of my old
-Cummins right about now.
-
-Best Regards,
-Jay
Jay,
At about 8 or 9,000 miles the dealership
noticed a leak in the oil pan of my truck. Took it
in the next week and the engine is pulled and a new
gasket is put on. About a week or two later it's
still leaking so it's back to the dealership and
once again the engine is out and another seal is
put on the oil pan. This time it is fixed and
hopefully for good. I'm not sure what could be
causing your leaks, but it sounds like your dealer
isn't doing a good job at trying to fix it...just
my guess, not that they're bad or anything, but it
just seems they could do better than that.
