Okay Now I'm Confused

Hello All,
All of this talk about exhaust and chips lately has
me confused.
My 1997 PSD made 03-97 has a 3.5 inch exhaust
system from the front to the rear. When banks says
it going to upgrade to a 3inch. HOW IS THAT A
UPGRADE?
My down pipe (which is hard to measure with the
shielding) is 2.25 x 4.50 or 10.12square inches.
The aftermarket 3 inch is 7.06 square inches
AGAIN HOW IS THIS AN UPGRADE?
And everybody agrees that the stock muffler flows
best mine has 3.5 inlet and 3.5 exit.
So are the 96's different or am i missing something
here.
