[Thread Backward] Re: Mileage/Power Improvement After BreaMsg # 4987 of 8004 on Powerstroke Diesel Conference (1)To: Jason, From: Dave Time: Sunday 01-25-98, 10:42 pm Jason, Thanks for your numbers. BTW, the shipping weight on mine was 6000-6100 #. I agree that it is much better than a 460, but it is falling well short of both my experience and expectations. I never expected 20+ MPG from the get go (though it sure would have been nice), but I'm depressed about the thought of having to drop 5-10K on it before learning just what I've got going. Again, right now it is doing no better, but rather worse, than an IDI, in both mileage and power, and that just doesn't jibe with what this engine is all about. Perhaps my IDI is exceptional... I noticed that the downtube is horrificly crimped, as was my IDI's, and I don't recall it being like this on the ones I examined when it first came out. On my IDI, I replaced the turbine housing and the whole exhaust path with a 3" ATS setup, and realized both an improvement in breathability, power, and a 25% towing mileage increase, from a somewhat variable 9-9.5 to a pretty consistent 11.5. Solo mileage did not change much, though. If it turns out that Ford diddled the exhaust somewhere in '97 (perhaps related to the short engine cover???) I'll no doubt do some bitching and moaning, prior to getting an aftermarket fix, but I'd really like to figure this out before beginning the parts swapping game. BTW, diesel here has just fallen below $1, while gas is still at $1.20 & up, so I have at least that to be jubilant about.
