-I am interested to hear from anyone who has
-information or experience in repowering gasoline
-powered pickups/trucks with diesel engines. I have
-heard stories about using a light Isuzu diesel,
-also have read couple articles about using perkins
-engines. even one fellow back in the mid 80's who
-took a brand new pickup pulled out the v-8 gas
-engine and put in a brand new John Deere diesel,
-because he liked the way it performed in his farm
-tractor.
-
-Why? you may ask, do I want to do this. I would
-like to have a pickup with the ride and
-driveability of a half ton (thats not a chevy) with
-the economy and reliability of a diesel. The
-pickup that I drive for transportation (not pulling
-or hauling heavy payloads) is a 300 6cyl. so I
-don't need a massive amount of power. I know that
-cummins has or at least used to have repower
-programs for Fords, but only for the heavy F-250
-and up.
-
-Anyhow, would appreciate any information, input,
-or comments that you may have.

-Thanks!

My first repower, in 1976, was a Perkins 4.236 into
a Landcruiser FJ40. I originally had a SM420 GM 4
speed with a planetary overdrive that was
unreliable, and I finally settled on a NP540 5
speed, that I still have. I re-installed that
powertrain into a Landcruiser FJ45 pickup. I still
have it; it's very rusty. I'll eventually put the
motor into something, maybe some sort of Land Rover
or a M37. I also have repowered a M37 with a
Hercules 4 cyl diesel, with a Clark 280VO 5 speed,
and am in the middle of a civilian Power Wagon 48
B1PW/Hercules 4cyl/NP540 (the old transmission I
bought in 1976!).
I like diesel re-powers.
