How does the jack and tire iron fit under the hood?

I had a flat tire the other day, and for the life of me, I couldn't get the jack to fit tightly against the tire iron on the inside fender. I was in a hurry to get them out, and didn't take the time to see exactly how I did it, and would appreciate if someone could check to see how the jack fits into the fender. The tire iron fits down into a rubber/plastic hole down low on the fender and then is kind of molded to the inside fender, and there is also a place where one side of the bottom of the jack (I'm assuming) fits into a slot on the inside fender as well. I need to know which direction the screw mechanism (mine is yellow) points with the jack installed correctly. Also, when is Ford going to find an easier way for it's customers to get the spare tire down from under the truck? It would be nice not to have to lay on the ground under the truck to get it out, plus the job of having to unscrew that big plastic nut thing once you do have it hanging. Now I have to get it back up there! I hope my wife never has to deal with having a flat on my truck! Thanks in advance for any info/advice. I give up trying to get my jack and iron back in.Carried it in the back for months till someone who is good at puzzles had a go and managed to make it fit.Do a search on the spare wheel holder. We went through that in detail a fair while back.------------------ 97 F350 drw.sc.E4OD.4.1

I am not sure about the jack because I have, luckly, not had to use it yet (knock on wood), but the new trucks have a crank up spaire holder. I dont know if it could be made to fit our trucks or not but some day I plan on looking in to it.

Dale, Place the tire iron into the holder with the end that goes over the nut pointing up. this should place the tire iron next to the finder well. Next screw the jack all the way down. Place the top of the jack pointing toward the cab and the yellow screw end pointing down toward the tire and the bottom of the jack will fit into the slot that is in the finder well. Hope this helps. ------------------ 96 F-350 PSD XLT CC DRW 4.10S Banks power pack, Hayden cooler, U. Well, hello.... I also had a flat (first in many years) this past weekend with my PSD. Was lucky enough to add some air and make it home to change the tire in the driveway. I also noted the location of the jack and parts and decided to use my floor jack to make the change. My factory jack has never been out and the yellow scew is facing the hood when up. I guess it has to be this way to allow the screw to be used to lock the jack into place. I also had a hard time getting the spare out and don't plan to put it back. I'm going to keep it in the bed (I have a cap on the truck). Sure would hate to have to take the spare out from under the truck on the side of the road or in bad weather. I'm also going to put another small jack in the back just so I won't have to use the factory setup. Cleve....------------------ 96 F250-4X4,PSD,auto,4.10,Hunter Green, ext.cab,LWB,K&N,add-a-leaf.

SKA, I guessed you missed the point. You are exactly who he need to ask, the ones who HAVEN'T had to use it, that way WE know how it's SUPPOSED to be in. I say we cause I'm not sure I got mine back right.

Well....someone sent me the perfect solution on how to get my jack installed "correctly"! A quick picture taken with a digital camera did the trick, and it all fell into place once I saw the picture. Actually, the yellow screw points downward, but toward the engine for it to fit for me. I was thinking that this picture should be somewhere on the forum for all to see in case this ever happens to them!If anyone would like a copy of the picture that was taken on how the jack fits in correctly, just e-mail me, and I'll send you one. Sure is nice when it all fits together so nicely. Thanks for the replies to my post guys! How about sending thsat picture to me also.I had to use the tire iron to remove the lugs, since in my small arsenal of tools, none of my sockets were large enough to remove the rear lugs. I jam the jack against the coolant reservoir to keep it from falling out. Still makes a rattle once and a while, and man does it irritate me. ------------------ '97 PSD CC 4x4

I too found the perfect solution for the OEM jack placement. Find the nearest DUMPSTER and place it there with a smile....absolutely worthless. They also make great fishing weights.... Mine rattled like He**, until I finally removed it...I now carry a 12 ton hyd jack and a Hylift......its ashame that a 30k dollar outfit has this junk attached. I was more worried about getting into the electrical items on the firewall...or....my wife doing this (very probable) should she have to change a flat.... Another poor design feature by Ford...from the design people who don't use what they design ------------------ JCH '97 F350, 4x4, CC, E4OD, PSD.

JoeServo...would have sent you the pic as an attachment to an e-mail, but you don't seem to have an e-mail address! Send me an address I can send it to..and it's yours! Also, what snowmobile do you have, as I noticed it's an interest of yours.Dale ------------------ dale2000@home.com '95 F250 XLT SC LB 4X4 PSD E4OD 4.10 Tru-cool 18,000 aux tranny cooler , K&N, standyne performance additive, BB upgrade, BD downpipe, U.S. Gear chip, A-pillar-pod, boost, pyro & trans temp Isspro guages.

Ron, couldn't get into the website.Dale, joe_serdenkovski@jabil.com, too bad the last name isn't in a spell checker. That stupid jack is good for a car that has a road clearance of 2 inches. by the time you get the jack up to the axle of our trucks, you run out of height. ------------------ '97 PSD CC 4x4

I took my jack out once when I first got the pickup, just to be sure it worked. It took me about 1/2 an hour to get it back in. And I had (thought I) paid attention when I was taking it out! So how does it fit?? Poorly, very poorly. But as was said above, it sure doesn't rattle oncew it's in. Pete

I agree with the post suggesting that this junk be tossed in a dumpster, except that it should be completely covered so nobody picks it out of its final resting place.Bought me a 12 ton hydraulic, and will be fabricating a steel box to replace the stock jack, using the present mounting holes for installation. I once had a flat, and after an hour of trying to get it to fit again, it still isnt replaced correctly.

Joe...I found that to look at the jack...it looks like it would only be good to lift a golf cart, but since it was all I had when I had my flat tire I decided to give it a try. I found that even with no blocks under it, it lifted my truck up more than high enough to get the spare on. My tires are about an inch higher than the stock ones, plus I've got an extra leaf spring in, so the stock jack (if you have the patience) does do the job. I even found the tire iron worked just fine to get the lugs off (stock aluminum wheels).Dale ------------------ dale2000@home.com '95 F250 XLT SC LB 4X4 PSD E4OD 4.10 Tru-cool 18,000 aux tranny cooler , K&N, standyne performance additive, BB upgrade, BD downpipe, U.S. Gear chip, A-pillar-pod, boost, pyro & trans temp Isspro guages.

The only thing the picture doesn't show is that the jack needs to be "raised" about 1/8" above it's fully collapsed position, or you can't get the wing-bolt in.There is a little metal tab welded on the rear leg of the mounting bracket, and it needs to bear on the small diameter of the jack plunger, not the rubber washer around it...hence the need to raise the jack a little. A agree that the OEM jacks are not wonderful tools, but they have never failed to serve my need in a pinch. Considering how seldom it gets used, I can live with it, as long as it works, which it always has. While I often carry a hi-lift jack, I have only manged to have it in the truck (other truck, not the PSD) one time out of maybe 6 flats. Truck fell off the hi-lift that time too...never had that happen with the OEM jack. My advice, don't throw it away. If you ever need it, you will _really_ need it! Since it is purely mechanical, you won't find all the hydraulic fluid leaked out either. ALL my hydralic jacks leak a little fluid (one more than a little) and that makes them a poor choice for "emergency standby" use. Also, I have never figured out how to use a hydraulic bottle jack to raise a car without placing parts of myself I'd prefer to keep intact under the truck. At least the OEM jack has a sufficiently long handle to keep me clear. On the question "why didn't Ford use the cable-lift thing". The lift mechanism would need to go exactly where Ford put the rear fuel tank. The 99's got the lift, but not the tank. Chevy chose to put fuel tanks outside frame rails, and we know what that lead to! -KF-
