EO4D torque coverter taking awhile to lockup

Hey everyone, I was wondering if you all can help me. I live in Minnesota and lately in the morning I have been noticing that when everything is cold, it has been taking about 3 miles for my torque converter to lockup. I can't remember if this has been happening before, just noticed it recently. The truck has about 52,000 miles and has been running great, I changed tranny fluid at 33,000 miles. I bought the truck with 31,000 miles. So I was wondering if this has happened to any other people that live in the cold regions. Is this just normal. I have big concerns because I just bought a 30' fifth wheel and will be pulling it around all summer. Thanks for continued support, this site has helped me alot.------------------ Duane: 1997 F-250 SC LB 4X4 4EOD 3.55 http://www.ford-diesel.com/photos/getphoto.php3?229 Shimmed, No more kitty kitty replaced with piece of pipe Ford Manual Hubs, Banks Transmission Temp Gauge

When it's cold outside the TC will stay un-locked for the first couple of miles. Mine will even do it sometimes when it warm. There has been a few comments about this in the past so everythiung sounds normal. It's probably to help warm up the motor.------------------ 95 F-250, Gutted Cat, Shimmed, Open Element Air Filter, Glow plug Relay Bypass Switch, 155K

Thanks TheTank for your reply. I hope that is so, I would hate to find out the hard way that something is going out. I appreciate your response.

Any Ford E4OD regardless of gas or diesel will not lock the converter until the coolant temp reaches 100 degrees. I think this is so you don't lug a cold motor which is as bad as revving a cold motor.

I agree, mine does the same, and has done so since new! Usually from 3 to 5 miles is all it takes when it's cold out, and then everything should work just fine. As mentioned, the temperature has to rise to a specific level before the tranny will lock up. Dale

If your going to tow, get another tranz cooler up front. DIS has a good one. And yes, your T/C seems normal.

Another reason for the delayed lockup when the tranny is cold, is the slippage helps bring the tranny fluid to a hotter, more fluid state. It is actually supposed to do this until the tranny comes up to operating temperature.

I usually lock it out of OD until it warms up. Since it doesn't lock up until warm, I will sometimes throw an "excessive slippage" code if I'm in OD without it warm enough to lock.

I live about 3 miles off the beaten track. The T/C not locking up from a cold start, as told above makes the truck feel "rough" for a while. I'm learning that the way to start the day is to turn off the O/D until I hit cruising speed, 3 miles in my case, and then engage it. May not be the correct way to do it, but makes me feel comfortable.Still hav'nt figured out if I need to disengage the O/D when towing (30' 6500 lbs travel trailer) that's still out with the jury.
