Change both or one battery?
#641228 - 02/06/02 09:50 AM

Had to jump start the truck recently. Tested the batteries. One tested bad and one tested good. Replaced only the bad battery. The bad battery was on the passengers side.
Should you replace both of the batteries given the circumstances or just the battery that tested bad?

Thanks

I've heard it recommended to change both at the same time. That's what I did when I replaced my old ones with Optimas.

I changed both. After 6 years they did well for a 3 year battery.

I hope I have this right but if not I will be corrected by the experts real soon . Our batteries are wired in parallel and this will cause a bad battery to draw down an good battery. The quickest way to kill a battery is to draw it down. Therefore I feel it is best to have like size and age batteries in the beast ..

I replaced mine just before winter . They were not bad but I did not want to risk it . I replaced both .

I believe the final answer is to "Change both batteries" Philbo is correct. I just changed both of mine and you could tell a difference.

I am confused. I assume the starter is 24volt and the batteries operate in series to get 24 volts (2-12 volt batteries). So is it like this => During the start sequence the batteries are in series (24 volt) and after starting their is some type of switching gear that allows the batteries to operate in parallel (12 volt).
Who knows what is going on-because I am confused

PHILBO Is correct. Last fall My '96 started cranking over slower all of a sudden.... Looked around for new batteirs for a day or two... Ended up back at My Ford Dealer to get the best price on a 6 yr. warranty 875 CCA battery...The pair was $160 incl. tax... I installed them right there in the parking lot!

nope the batteries are wired in parrallel. this gives us even more amperage to run the glow plugs and turn the starter also

sparky30_06 is correct. Your system is 12 volts all the way. Two batteries is all about mega amps to power all thoes power hungry items in our trucks.

Think about it like this. Would you change one battery in a 4D cell mag light when it goes dim? Same thing.

Good point Bob, never thought about it that way. This will give me a good reason for the wife when it is time to replace the batteries.

Bob,

Not quite, if in series like a flashlight the good cells do not try and charge the weak cell. If in parallel this is exactly what happens. Sorry to disagree, but here your example while has the correct end decision, the actual necessity of replacing both batteries when only one is bad is not similiar to your flashlight example. You're usually 99.99% correct but in this is in your .01% error. I wish I could be that accurate, but I can't.

No fame intended

Respectfully,

Larry

Larry, no flame taken. I realised my example wasn't right after I posted it, but figured it got the point across. The battery folks tell me that the good battery tries to charge the older battery and the vehicle pulls more load off the good one, so you end up with a highly shortened life on the new one.

Bob,

No problem - there is alway room to learn - now your up to 99.995%. BTW I'll be looking for the EVANS coolant change next time I'm down in your neck of the woods sometime next year when visiting our favorite place WDW.

Be safe and happy,

Larry

It will still work to convince the wife, she won't find your 1% error.
