Brake fluid... have you ??
#1568977 - 01/04/04 12:50 PM

Well yesterday I flushed my brake fluid again. It had been a couple years so I thought some fresh juice would be nice. It still looked good but not like fresh fluid.

How many of you have flushed or had your brake system flushed? Not just bled but flushed with nice clean fluid. I have noticed in some of the truck pics the brake fluid looks like coffee. My mast cyl looks like it has water in it now because it is so clean.

I bought one of THESE. I borrowed someone's and it worked great so I bought my own. I also use it to suck the oil out of HPOP reservoir when changing my oil and for sucking the fluid out of power steering pump.

I did mine when I changed my front calipers. Also did the rears. I think I forgot to bleed the RABS valve. Might be a squirt of dirty fluid backed up in it.

BTW, I don't think my rear ABS works anymore, but the diagnostic light checks fine on start up.

That looks like a nice bleeder. Does it work easy for one man operation? My truck was held hostage while I waited for my friend to swing by and I was so amazed that he came over that I did my Jeep also since I had the brake fluid jug open.

Nice to know you won't be corroding internals from moisture... next might be a power steering flush.

The vacuum tool works great don't it, I have had one for years,I could not bleed the brakes on my Camaro so I had to use one of those, now I use it all the tiem.

I bought mine used and had to buy the hose since it was missing the end. $30 for that darn hose. I should have just bought a new pump, oh well.

That pump works so easy for one guy, almost monkey proof. There is a K-D brand one that puts pressure to the master cyl and you open bleeders to drain. This one sucks it from the bleeders. I find more uses for it all the time. Like the coolant reservoir to suck dry and clean, washer fluid resvoir. I even stuck the hose into the injector cups to clean the fluid out and it fits down into the cylinder hole too.

I have This one.

The picture doesn't show everything, but it works great, and you can use it for testing sensors.

I gravity bleed mine a few times, but needed to this to absolutely sure I had the air out when I did my brake conversion.

I use a hospital vacume pump! Wife brought home two old medical carts (that are now tool chests ) In one there was two old style pumps with the 2 quart glass jars. It is great, I use it to bleed brakes and to suck out the HPOP res. It sucked the res dry in 45 seconds!

I used one of those mityvac pumps the first time. It worked great but I got tired of empting the cup since it doesn't hold much.

Just flushed mine out a month or two ago. Switched over to DOT 4 also...

Cheers...

I flushed mine with alcohol then rinse flushed with regular brake fluid, then filled with silicone DOT 5 brake fluid. Doesn't seem to have any compatability problems either on my old 79 or the 97. No corrosion either due to water accumulation since the silicone does not absorb moisture like regular fluid.

Right, I have one and it's my big complaint. I wonder if I could pick up a medical vacuum collection jar -- say 1500cc or so? Maybe for about $20?

Hey ambulance guys, what do you think? Do you know wher I can get one?

Dave,

I was under the impression that D.O.T. 5, or any silicone brake fluid was a no no for ABS systems because of the viscosity difference. Does your RABS still work fine? Supposedly the thicker/more viscus silicone does not allow the system to bleed quickly enough to permit the ABS to un-lock the brakes.

I found this 1200cc Medi-Vac® Suction Canister for $4 each. It includes a float shutoff valve so the fluid won't go back into the pump. I would prefer something a bit bigger, but I couldn't find anything else that would touch the price. I expect it will be OK with fluids like oil, fuel, and brake fluid, but I'm not sure. I ordered 2 and will let you know if I have any problems with it. I intend to use it with my MityVac vacuum pump.

That looks like it would work just fine. For the price it is worth trying.

I flushed mine this summer and went with dot 4 fluid. I have one of those vacumm tools but have not tried it yet. Do the blleder screws seal well enough around the threads with it cracked open?

I have never changed my brake fluid. I all honesty I cannot remember the last time I checked it . How often should it be changed? I was figuring on maybe doing it someday when I change the brake shoes but they seem to be holding up great so I may be at 100,000 before the pads even need changed for the first time.

I've always done it the hard way: one person on the brake pedal, one under the hood keeping the brake fluid reservior full, and me on the ground tightening and loosening the bleeder nut yelling "PUSH . . . RELEASE . . . PUSH . . . RELEASE"

I think Ben's point is that with a vac pump, we can eliminate the person pumping the pedal, and also the repeated open/close of the bleeder nut. Now if there were a way to feed the master cylinder and keep it topped off, it could truly be a one person job. Perhaps something like those automatic pet water dishes?

Maybe that's why the MityVac collection cannister is so small. When you fill it up, it's time to refill the master cylinder reservior again?

Yes, it has enough suction that you won't get air back into the lines.

Crumm
In the Honda/Yamaha motorcycle and atv world they suggest flushing fluids every 2 years or 24k miles. I would say every 2 years or 30k for use? With my junk, I would do it once a year cause it is so easy. And $5 for a good bottle of brake fluid, some time and beer it looks good. HERE is a pic just after it was done.

Powerstroke_mike
Shoebear is correct, it is a one man operation. A poor mans trick was take a coffee can and dump brake fluid into the bottom. Take a hose and run from the bleeder to the coffee can. Then open bleeder and pump, the fluid will keep air from entering the lines. This also allows for a one man deal.

Shoebear
HERE it is we have the refiller at work. I never messed with it since pooring fluid into the reservoir is easy. Another picture of bleeder kit.

Ok well try and click on the '95 F250 SC in my signature, to see if it works?

This is the smaller version.

Try it again, I can get it to work?

Never have locked up the rears empty, only the fronts, wet or dry. Interesting point! Maybe its just dumb luck?

Since I live down here in Fla, I 'try' to bleed the brakes yearly with flushing every couple of years. However, since being recalled, I did a flush cause my wife didn't like driving my truck while I was away.

With the temperature shifts I see here, I get gunk out every time. So far only thing I have had to replace has been pads and shoes.

My changes have always been the old way. The can does work. The trick is to get enough fluid in the can to cover the hose. That way no air is sucked up when the pedal is released. Another thing I do is to bleed them without power, so I can feel if there is air in the lines. Then I finish it off by getting someone to sit in the seat with the engine running and yelling pump... and hold...

A good cigar, a couple of beers, a nice afternoon and a radio - what more could you ask for

I got the vacuum collection containers today. They look like they will work OK. Thare are some minor issues, though:
  • They are made to be disposable. When you put the lid on, it locks into place with three catches and is difficult to remove. However, it can be removed with finesse and effort, but I wouldn't be surprised if the catches break before too long.
  • The tube fittings are bigger than the tubing my MityVac has. I'll need to buy some adapters.
  • There is no descender tube on the input hole. This is not a big deal for sucking, but pushing fluid out with pressure is impossible without it. Perhaps I can rig something up, though.
On the plus side, the float shutoff valve looks like it will work well and prevent me from sucking fluid into the vacuum pump. Overall, probably a pretty good investment for about $8-9 each including shipping.
