Fleetrite Premium Antifreeze/Coolant ?????????
#185016 - 01/26/00 10:06 AM

Just bought 3 gallons of this Fleetrite antifreeze/coolant for my truck from an International dealer. This is an ethylene glycol, low silicate antifreeze/coolant. Also has Navistar Internation corp labeling on the bottle. Is this antifreeze/coolant OK/GOOD/Recommended to use?????

Navistar/International dealer did say that this antifreeze/coolant does NOT have the additive in it. Can anyone verify this?????

I tried to find the Heavy duty Prestone stuff in the black bottle, but nobody can get it.

thanks (just want to be sure on this stuff)

>>>Is this antifreeze/coolant OK/GOOD/Recommended to use?????<<<

It sounds like the right stuff. Never take the word of a salesman. Read the fine print on the package. Look for the buzzwords

supplemental coolant additive (SCA)
molybdate (MoO4)
nitrite (NO2)

If it says it contains any of that stuff, then "it's in there"!

Anyway, after you change the coolant I'd test it anyway. Just to be sure. If it's below 2 SCA units per gallon, then add some Fleetguard Coolant additive or Ford FW-16.

As far as being the right stuff, the label should say it meets Ford Spec ESE-M97B44-A.

SmokeyWren,

NO buzzwords at all!
Does give chart on % vs water to freeze point/boil point.

So no SCA, MoO4 or NO2!

Fine print says "Manufactured for Navistar Corporation...."

Also says "Recommended for HD Diesel motors"

If anybody can find more information about this stuff, I would be greatly appreciated!

Anyway, looks like I will drain 2 gallons of current antifreeze/coolant & replace with 2 gallons with 100% Fleetrite Antifreeze/coolant. Run 50 miles so stuff can throughly mix & then test coolant. Most likely add 1 pint of FW-16 to be on the safe side.

Also NOT labeled anywhere about Ford spec ESE-M97B44-A.

Anyway thanks again!

JETSLED:

As SmokeyWren said, if you have a question as to whether the Fleetrite antifreeze (or any other kind) contains the DCA4 additive, the best thing to do is check the DCA4 level in the coolant after you refill it and drive it a little (to make sure it's mixed well). But you can test it before you put it in the truck if you want to by just mixing a 50/50 antifreeze/water solution in a small cup and using a Fleetguard test strip to check it.

Also, I found the Prestone Heavy Duty antifreeze (low silicates, black plastic bottle) at a couple of local heavy truck parts dealers for about $8/gallon. You might try there next time if you haven't already.

I've been looking for Prestone HD in the black jug also. No luck. I even e-mailed Prestone 3 times in the past two weeks, no reply. Maybe they really don't make it. I can't even buy Fleetguard around here. No one around here (truck dealers, retail stores, dealers, distributers, etc) No one seems to stock or even be willing to order name brand stuff. There is off-brand stuff with out identification as to what it is and what its for..... Nothing on line that I could find either. Whats a guy to do?

Fleetguard Complete anti-freeze is what you are looking for. It has DCA4 SCA already in it. It is available in EG and PG. It is also sold as concentrate (you add the water) or pre-mixed (already mixed 50/50 with water).

Has anyone looked at their local John Deere dealership? They sell a premix in 2-1/2 gal bottles that is supposed to have the SCA in it. Have not looked at the bottle to see if it has the Ford spec on it or not, but I do trust the Green Machine people to have a good product.

(Edit) Just braved our version of cold (33*) to run out to the barn and check. JD bottle states no SCA needed on initial fill!

Three items I would look for in a coolant,
is it compatable with the rubber seals, and is it 50/50 coolant/distilled water (primix),
Cavitation additive included.
