delo 400 is it full synthetic?
#216703 - 12/22/00 01:30 AM

just bought some delo 400 and going to change from dino oil. this is the new 5-40 synthetic. ( or so it says)
first... is it full synthetic it doesnt say semi on the label.. if it is the price is far better than buying the HD mobile Diesel full synthetic.
wondering as the shell dealer was next door to the chevron one and their rotella 10-30 semi-syn blend was more $ than the delo?
whats a good price for delo 5-40 ? i paid $40 roughly for a case of 4-4qt bottles. i was happy with the price-- should i have been?

Delo 5W50 is group III hydrocracked along the lines of Castrol Syntec but with a diesel spec. It is excellent oil for the price you paid which I assume is 4 gallons for $40.00

I buy my Delo 15-40 non syn. oil at WalMart for $5.50 gallon. It has served my well. NAPA sells it by the gallon for $6.00/gal.

Tom's got it right. Its a very good oil at the price you paid. It nears full synthetic performance but at fraction of the price.

I have some guys that have analsis of it at 10,000 miles in TDI's and its still good to go. So the extended drain capabilities are there. Along with good cold weather flow!

the 15-40 was cheaper than the 5-40 i bought i wanted to improve cold weather astarts and hopefully my mileage...HOPING that is i also dont see the reason for the 15 weight in my drive to work 15minutes it isnt even warmed up yet.
if the 5-40 isnt full synthetic wouldnt they have to state that? there are a few rotella's the semi synthetic blend and a full synthetic. the delo 5-40 was almost half the price of the full syn rotella.

The group III is now marketed as full synthetic, Castrol has been doing it for several years. It may not have quite the performance of the base stock used in Delvac 1 or similar oil, but for a turbo diesel the group III stock is excellent.

If I had a local source of Delo synthetic, I'd use it for the price you paid. I've been using CAT spinoff of Delvac 1 at twice the price. These engines are not hard on oil and this group III oil should give excellent cold starts and high temp protection. i've noticed a .5-.75 MPG increase since changing over to the 5W40.

chevron commercial agents have the case of 4 gallons on sale at about $36. it seemed like such a deal i bought 3 cases= 3 oil changes
if i can get my truck up to 11 mpg towing i'll be one happy camper....
the mobile delvac synthetic was $22 a gallon here so far more than double the price i paid for the delo synthetic..

thanks or the input...

I bought 2 - 5gal pails of Synthetic Delo 400 in Tuscaloosa for 114.80. Just put it in, and am going to Green bay on Jan 4. Any comments on cold weather?

Dumb as a box of rocks here about diesel oil. Can(should) we use 5W oil in severe applications (eg towing at or over the GCWR) in warm/hot weather even with the group III Delo?

Chevron Delo 400 Synthetic heavy duty motor oils are recommended for use in diesel and four-stroke cycle gasoline
engines, torque converters, gear cases, and hydraulic systems operating year-round in arctic-type climates. They
utilize the latest technology to provide excellent performance with either high or low sulfur diesel fuels.

Chevron Delo 400 Synthetic heavy duty motor oils meet

API Service Categories
CG-4, CF, CD1, SH, SJ
Energy Conserving for API SH (SAE 0W-30)
CH-4 (SAE 5W-40)

Hope this answers you question. It say's its mostly for arctic type conditions. I would say this time of year you could use it, but when spring comes around I would switch back to the 15w40

I would say if you are looking for year round use of a 5w oil go with a full synthetic like
Delvac 1, or Amsoil series3000.
http://www.amsoil.com/products/hdd.html
http://www.mobil1.com/mobil_lubes/onhighway/products_services/delvac1/index.html

These should give better hot weather and cold weather performance. They are more shear stable, and have higher VI's

If you want a hydrocracked oil that is tops as far as I am concerned check out Cenex oils.
I use the Super TMS 15 W 40 year around. Here is a link to the specs. PDA.

The Delo 400 Synthetic 0W30 that I am using is a 100% Group IV polyalpholefin PAO oil with a viscosity index of 190 and a pour point of -76F. It can be used where a 10W30 oil is recommended, because it gives similar protection at operating temperature, but much better flow (critical to turbo bearings) at cold startup.

The Delo 400 Synthetic 5W40 is a Group III hydrocracked synthetic oil with a viscosity index of 175 and a pour point of -45F

In below zero weather, my PSD has spun over easily and started quickly without being plugged in. It still smokes a lot, but it is less noisy.
