As this Phoenix is resurrecting itself, you might want to go HERE and look under Batteries and peruse some of those links in preparation as this new mob assembles here and sets out to catch this "horse" and beat it to death again.
To start it off, I personally don't see the need to spend that kind of money on batteries for my Van.

RockSalt:
I have had the Optimas for about a year now. The OEM crap lasted nearly 2 years. I have NEVER had a battery fail that soon. Since vibration is a likely cause, and the low temp voltages of the spiral gel cells is much better (I go NORTH sometimes in the winter) I decided to give the Optimas a try. What surprised me is that the truck actually seems to start better with these batteries (when it starts at all), so it seems that their low temp voltages and available cranking amperage really IS better than wet lead-acid. Now if Optima would only make a glow plug relay.......

I thought that it was recommended to go with the red tops, rather than the yellow tops. Isn't the red top(s) a "starter" battery?
Kindest regards,

yellows are combination deep cycle and starting. Blue tops are deep cycle. Red tops are starting batteries.
Some use yellows if they run high powered stereos and such. Bob

I have dual Optima Yellow Tops, I also have a 2000 watt stereo system, in regards to using a red over the yellow because of starting (cold cranking amps), my yellow tops were tested before I bought them and they showed over 1130 cca each, more than enough to start a cranky diesel in the morning.

I'll bet those are not CCA but at ambient temperature. I think it is reduced as the temperature drops but I do not know what the official temp is that CCA are calculated.

I have owned a pair of Optima red-tops for about 5 years that I run in my porsches. They are just now beginning to get a little flaky. Not bad considering I only run those vehicles about once a week and do not disconnect the batteries in between.

I have ran dual yellow tops for about 2 and a half years with no problems. I can turn on all my aux. lights and my volts hardly drop. Spend the cash you won't regret it. Just my $0.02

I have the Red Tops. Original Motorcraft batteries were 5 years old and still good, even under a load test. I changed mine because I got the Optimas for FREE !!! RICH

I have two of the yellow topped ones in the E350 that I have now, one is new, and the other is from the gas E350 that I had before, this will be the first alaskan winter for me and the diesel and the batteries, will let you know how they do.

I stuffed four Blue Tops under my hood 3 years ago. Ground the lip off the battery trays and mounted two on a side lengthwise, rather than crosswise like the EOM ones come. Needed the extra juice for severe winching and to power my RV at night.
