Brakes??? What Should I Do?

I desperately need more stopping power. I have the 22.5X13.25 Tactor trailer wheels and my truck will not stop. What should I do? I have been reading about the slotted rotors but I dont know if that will be enough. Do I need bigger rotors or just slotted with better pads? Also is there anywhere to get better calipers? Will the 05 rotors work on my truck? Are they better? Any help is appreciated.

Hello BigWheel,
You might want to modify your profile to show a signature with details about your rig, so people can figure out what your situation is.
You can search the archives for brake topics...there are a lot of them.
My current understanding is that you can improve braking by
1. repairing the current system if there are any problems. 2. Doing the new caliper thing you mentioned. 3. Putting in shoes, calipers with a higher coefficient of friction. 4. Putting in hydroboost. 5. Putting on smaller tires. The large tires have made it more difficult to stop because to get the equivalent stopping power you used to have, you have to provide a LOT more pedal muscle to accomplish the same thing.

2005's will not fit on the truck unless someone starts to make torque bracket adapters, although it's a good thought with the increased caliper pistons and increased diameter rotors. I had a Webshots album about the changes, but lost it when I did not renew my premium membership.
Your problem is you just changed the leverage between the rolling radius of the tire and the swept radius of the rotor. It's like using a length of pipe on a breaker bar to increase torque. In this case the larger tire is the pipe. As it's heavier so there is a flywheel effect.
One you need very aggressive friction materials, such as Performance Friction's Carbon Metallic. I normally recommend the Z-pads to abrade rotors true, but the CM have a little more end of stop friction.
Slotted rotors in this case would be worthwhile. For most normal use they are not needed.
Another path you could go is to install stock front rotors, calipers and brackets for a F-550. If I remember, they fit. These would give you larger swept diameter, and an increase in caliper piston size. The downside is you are going to have a longer pedal travel due to the increased displacement needed for the larger caliper pistons, I have not tried this, so I can't confirm it will work, but when I looked at this two years ago, it seemed feasible.
The rear brakes will not adapt over due to the increased width of the drum in hat section of the F-550 rotor.

How about an exhaust brake, I put Frozen Rotors on my rig along with their pads, they are the slotted ones and they work really well, I do not have an exhaust brake but I hear thay work really good. The Frozen Rotors are a little pricey but worth it.

The brake system in these trucks is awesome. You may have a problem that needs to be corrected. Its best to go through the system, rebuild your calipers, flush the system, use high temp brake fluid, and some good aftermarket pads (not ceramic).
I did all the above, and I can stop the truck better than most cars out there.
Slotted rotors are a plus, and so is stainless brake lines.

You will like the combination of PF Carbon Metallic pads and ART frozen slotted rotors. They work very well together. If you are running stock brakes you won't believe the difference.
No more scary moments wondering if you can get it stopped before you reach the Kia stopped at the light.
EGR also makes some interesting stuff for our trucks.

The same thing that happens when you lose power to any brake system.
But the magnetic driveline brakes - including the Thelma brand - do not replace your hydraulic brake system. They are in addition to your stock brakes. They work extremely well. Used on International diesel-powered school busses that go up and down foothills and mountains in the "Front Range" of the Rockies west of Denver. Keeps the munchkins on the bus safe.
Expensive, but your kid's safety is worth it.

It seems to me that larger rotors would also help. The more friction area you have the better the braking. If I am not mistaken they did this upgrade awhile back on Trucks TV. They replaced the rotors and calipers. I think the new calipers had two pistons or larger ones, anyway it was a nice upgrade. So far my brakes take care of my needs and I reckon I should be thankful for that. Good Luck!! KL
