Optima - Red or Yellow Top????
#1181496 - 04/23/03 10:11 AM

I called Optima this morning and got part numbers for the Red Top 34 #8002-002 and the Yellow Top D34 #8012-021, and then the adapter part #G65-242-0025, they assured me that the yellow top was the way to go because of the amount of watts my stereo pulls rms (about 1700) so they told me to use the yellow top, they also told me that the red top has 800cca and the yellow is 750cca, is it true that our trucks only need 750cca. I am trying to make sure that my $300 investment is going to be correct for my truck, I would hate to spend that much on the wrong batteries. So for any of ya'll with optimas please let me know the part numbers you are using and if there was any difficulty mounting them in the stock trays, also the part numbers I have are for single post and I don't have the dual post #s.

Anyway, please try and help me decide which one to get.

Thanks in advance.

Specs and prices here.

Red top model 34 is the "normal" battery we need for our PSDs. It has 750 CCA and costs $136 from that outfit above. I plan to order two of them real soon now if I can't find a better deal on the model 34.

Yellow top model 34D is a deep cycle battery needed for an RV or boat, but it will work okay as the starter battery for your truck. But it has only 650 CCA and it costs $169. That should be the ideal battery for my RV, so the next time mine bites the dust I'll probably replace it with a 34D yellow top.

I'm not sure I agree with them on the yellow top. Unless you are going to run your stereo without the truck running or have other accessories that will be run withoutthe engine (such as a winch) and discharge your batteries down to 60% then the red top is fine. Just for starting and normal "engine on" accessories I think the red top with more cold crank amps is probably better for starting the big powerstroke. It takes a lot of current to turn the big engine especially when it is cold and the oil is thick. Thats why there are two "big batteries" in it. For accessories that are going to be run with the engine running the better solution is to have the dual alternator option and the idle control box that will throttle the engine while monitoring the battery status (called charge protect mode). That said I do have a yellow top in my work jeep but I run a whole bunch of computers and radio test equipment and often leave equipment on without the engine running. I got the yellow top so that it would handle the deeper discharges without damage to the battery. A normal battery in our jeeps gets run down often and results in a very short lifespan. I have a camper on my powerstroke but do not run camper accessories from the powerstroke batteries for that reason. I use big deep discharge gell batteries (similar to the yellow top) that are charged from two solar panels on the top of the camper for that type of "discharge service". I also believe that deep discharge batteries are less tolerant to constant charging. For that reason I built my own temperature compensated regulator for safely maintaining the charge on the camper batteries. Vehicle charging systems are notorious for overcharging batteries. Proper charge rate and terminal voltage is very temperature dependent. Mostly vehicle charging systems charge the hell out of the batteries to compensate for the increased voltage per cell that is required to get the current flow into a cold battery due to cold weather. I think failure to compensate for the charge voltage and rate in hot weather does a lot to reduce the life of car batteries.

In my personal jeep I will put in a yellow top only if I get an electric winch. If I do the a hydraulic winch then I'll buy a red top. When I need to do batteries in the Powerstroke I'll probably do the red. Hope this helps.

Those specs are incorrect, I just called Optima to verify the CCA for the Red Top and it is 800CCA and the Yellow Top is 750CCA, it used to be 650cca for the yellow but they have fixed the battery and it is now 750cca, both the website you listed and Optima's website are wrong, Optima is trying to update their website now.

Or you can install a real battery that will handle both starting and big stereos. www.odysseybatteries.com/

BTW We sell both the Optima and the Odyssey.

My truck will be 4 years old next month, and my 50+ years of experience with lead-acid batteries in vehicles convinced me that 4 years is about the max life of most batteries. So today I went to town and talked to my battery guy. He had only one style in stock, the red-top combo GM/Ford style with both top and side posts. 34/78? 800 CCA, 980 CA. Powerful, Dude!

I told him I could get two of the the type 34 Optimas for $272 out the door. So he sold me two of the type 34/78 for $272 out the door, including tax and install. I have no idea if that was a "good deal" for me, but I'm a happy camper. Except I wonder if Bob would have beat that price?

The Optimas are smaller than our stock batteries, and the battery hold-down area is made different. So they had to jury-rig the hold down by putting a big fender washer on the hold-down bolt. It looks like it won't hold for long, so youse guys that have fabricated a hold-down bracket for the Optimas on a 7.3L, please 'splain to us ignerts how you did it.

Well I personally hate the red tops they never last. But as you can guess they have usually big audio systems and other accessories running off them. I would either go with the yellow or as David said step up to a hawker battery like the oddysey. They are the best battery I have ever used and I have tried alot.

You can get the red top on Ebay for $109.00 shipped to your door. Just bought 2 for my old Stangs. I will put them in my truck when the OEM's die.
