Was that around 1400-1800 RPM? How did you record it to get it to stand out so well?

Bruce,
RPM 1400-1950
MPH 38-45
ambient temp 60
fuel level 3/8th
I used a Compaq boom mic to do the recording. I placed the mic in a hole just above the throttle pedal. Above the throttle pedal there is a factory 1/2" hole in the inside cab insulation, the mic fit like a glove. From inside the cab the mic was about three inches from #8 cylinder.

Well, if that's cackle then I'm pleased to say that I don't have knock OR cackle. I'm still doing the regulator mod though!

Thanks Beantown,
I have been looking for a good recording of what cacle sounds like. I was worried I had it. I am no longer worried I have it, just worried I will get it. Looks like mod time.
Excellent recording.

Mine has started doing that occasionally. Trying a different fuel additive to see if it helps. Once the parts get here I will be doing the TT/Hutch mods. Just hope that injector hasn't bite the bullett.

mitley_350,
Can you see (I should say hear, not see) why those of us who have a bad case of cackle are upset? Consider yourself lucky that your truck doesn't sound like mine. Oh wait, that's a normal diesel sound!
I can't wait to hear what TT Hutch and the rest of the gang say when they hear that wav file.
See ya,

You bet, I would be hoppin mad if my truck sounded like that. There is another cackle file out there, but it was really hard to hear, and I was real worried that I had the dreaded cackle. Your wav file hits it right on the head. There is no disputing that what I heard on your file sounded destructive. I am sorry you have it. Please report back after you do the mods. I (like everyone else) would love to hear what you have to say after the mods. Another wav file after the mods would be awesome.
Thank you for posting this.

Beantown, Hutch, crew:
If after you do the fuel tank mods and the noise still
exists, then...?
Injector replacement? buy a dod*ge? (lol)
Someone mentioned IDM inspection before.
Related at all?
Just curious.

Beantown,
Mine wasn't that bad in terms of frequency or volume, but never the less I had it. Mine sounded like more of a clatter/chatter,
yours sounded like a rod! Feel for you brother!

I like to hear a .wav at a known rpm when it's cackling as bad as you can get it to and one on the same day and run at a known rpm when you don't think that it is cackling.

That is the sound I had, but not quite so bad. I have done the regulator and only the idle knock is left. The engine sounds are more consistent through the 1400-2000RPM now. The cackle is gone. I still plan on doing the tank and LL8.

Traildust,
"Cackle" IS injector failure or injectors missing the pre-charge and going straight to the main fuel shot too early for whatever reason.

Thanks Hutch, I think I might have figured as much. It's just that this recording is about the most pronounced I have heard. It almost sounds like a Injector is dry firing, if that is possible.

DougB,
I think I got the recording so well do to the fact that the mic position was inside the cab and three inches from #8 cylinder. I appreciate your sympathy!
Dan,
I'd replace it with a Cummins before I drive a Do#ge!
Larry,
I'll get the recordings for you on thursday.
Traidust,
I wish it was a bad injector! Cylinder contribution test were done and F3rd say's everything is ok. Normal diesel sounds??? Yeah right!
I'll tell you what that recording has done. It shut up alot of people who said it doesn't exsist! Even a dealer I took it to now believes! I know alot of people have downloaded it cause my bandwidth on the website has gone through the roof! lol My bandwidth is going out the window in a hurry!
Anyone have a server we can post the wav at?
Thanks,
Shane

Please download this file cackle.wma It's a .wma file and can be read with Windows media player or recorder. It's half the size of the original file and should help my bandwith!
Thanks,

beantown,
In reply to:
Larry,

Thanks I'll be waiting. I would like to have full .wav files initially and I'll save them on my hard disk and then you can compress them for simply listening to. I have your original .wav saved so you can do whatever you want to it for listening purposes and to save bandwidth. For me I would if at all possible like to have the most detailed info as possible to work with. While your original .wav was interesting, there were two many dynamic events to sort thru - I would like to see about 20secs of steady state data if at all possible.

Larry,
Can you give me your e-mail address? I have another wv file from the same day. It's 60 seconds long and I was at a constant speed/rpm on just about the whole file. It's a wav of when it's not cackling real bad. None the less the cackle is there.

beantown,
Check you PMs sent you my e-mail address and yes I'm trying to see what I see from an acoustical standpoint. My biggest problem is I need a couple of good wave files posted on the web on a non knocker/cackler to compare to my non cackling and only occassional knocking vehicle and make sure I'm not getting artifacts and anomalies in what is being posted on the web when compared to the the direct measurements I'm making on my van - it's the ole apples and oranges problem.

Here is a link to a wav I made a year or so ago. It still sounds the same today. I'd like to fix it one of these days. It does it between 1400 and 1600 rpms.
http://www.geocities.com/anderson_rda/misc/
I'll try it on my bellsouth web page, geocities has a some download limitations, bellsouth might too.

All:
I notice that some people are saying, “If cackle sounds like that, then I don’t have it.” But, I’m not sure I would jump to that conclusion yet. I notice that there are a few sound files out there that try to capture the dreaded cackle. I think Beantown’s is by far and away the best at isolating the cackle... I mean it REALLY stands out. I think that that has something to do with the way that he recorded it.
He described his recording methodology earlier in this thread. He put a small boom mic in the ½” hole above the go pedal. With the mic wedged between the firewall and the sound insulation barrier, I think he got some good results. He was able to get a sound image that didn’t have: (1) cabin noise (which was found in some of the previous recordings that had the mic mounted inside the cockpit), or (2) road noise and additional engine noise (which was found in some of the previous recordings that had the mic mounted inside the engine compartment).
My theory is that the cackle may exist to the same extent in some of the other files, but you can’t pick it out as easily because of the other noise factors or because of the insulation between the cab and the engine compartment. Anyway, it seems to me (being as anal retentive as I am) that it would be interesting if we could get the people who have the capability to do this type of recording to setup a standard method so that we may be able to compare these sound files “apples to apples”.
Perhaps we develop and use the Beantown recording method: Mic placed between firewall and insulation; use the standard sound recorder that comes with all versions of Windows (or perhaps there is another free sound recording tool that is better); use the same sampling rate, etc, etc. Maybe Beantown could take the lead on this and snap some digital photos of the mic install, provide some recording standards, etc.
What do you think?
Eh

^^^^ excellent idea! I'm going to look at my truck when I get home to see if I can locate this 1/2" hole. Also the specs should show/specify what microphone brand/model he was using. Sampling specs are critical! Beantown let's here it! (bad pun i know) -Jaseun

eh,
OK here's exactly how I did it.
Laptop used Compaq Armada; 7790DMT
Operating system; Windows 98SE
Recording Software; Microsoft Windows Sound Recorder
Microphone; cheesy standard issue Compaq boom mic
Position of the mic; Look above your throttle pedal, about an inch and a half above the throttle you should see a 1/2" hole that is cut in the sound insulation of the firewall. I stuck the mic in the hole until it hit the firewall and then backed the mic out just enough so it was not bouncing off the metal of the firewall. If you were to shove a ruler through the firewall, your real close to cylinder number 8.
I found a straight piece of road with a slight incline to record on. By the way, it is not easy to find a straight piece of road in this part of the country. I did the recording on a 60 degree day with the engine at operating temperature with 3/8ths tank of fuel. Constant speed was about 40-45 locked in O.D.
Pics of the mic position to follow!
Eh, I agree we should try to do this the same. I don't know if what I did is the absolute best way to do it or not, but it seemed to work real well.
See ya,
Shane
