Hey Bob,
You missed the infamous cackle range of somewhere between 1500 and 2000. Great sounds of the other ranges though! Nice chart. Your rig sounds awesome! Thanks!

Bob,

Thanks for doing the sound files. It would be great if you could record the truck between 1500 and 2000 rpms and vary the throttle as this is when all the other trucks that I have listened to develop their cackle.

Thanks again,

Ok, I'll do one today cranking and reving it and varying the rpms.

Idle sounds good and fortunately for me, it sounds like mine, haven't done any mods yet other than the Hutch fuel line. It sounds like you have the same tapping sound at idle like I do, like its coming from the bellhousing area. That tapping bugs the $#&% out of me!

Bob,

Your truck at idle sounds pretty good. I noticed that there is a lot more exhaust noise so it is a little more difficult to discern any odd noises from the motor. I do hear a little either injector or valve noise, but it is very faint. I hope after I swap the LL injector for the standard my truck will quiet down. I have a definite tappa tappa as TT puts it.

Look forward to hearing your truck as you vary the throttle.

Thanks,

With stacks and no muffler, it's hard to isolate the engine, but I did the best I could. The varying rpm wav is pretty good. Wait till you hear the turbo.
Bob

P.S. also, with 80k miles, I'm possitive I have some injector wear. I plan on new injectors when it is all worked out and we all think we have accomplished the best system.

The last one is up. This one, I cranked the engine and started it and ran it at many different rpms, but mostly stayed in the 1400-2200 range.

Bob,

Listened to your throttle varying sound file. Were you driving the truck or were you just pumping the go pedal in park? Sounds like the latter to me. Don't want to be a pain in the rear, but most of the bad cacklers that have been posted were with the guys driving the trucks. Beantown & Contemplating73 were probably the worst.

I can't hear any cackle in your sound file, however I was under the impression that the cackle really only showed up if the trucks are being driven and lugged a little in the 1500 to 2000 rpm range. Is this correct? Since you finished the mods, do ever hear any cackle while driving your truck?

Thanks,

I guess that's proof in the puddin'. Wow, a completely different sounding engine. Amazing. Has anyone come to the consensus that the check valves should definately be removed, or is this a optional thing? This would be post regulator mod.

I don't see this as indisputable proof...

The rig needs to be driving, with a load on the engine, and then ease the pedal down from about 1300 rpm up...

My (fuel system unmodified) rig sounds just like that when sitting in park or neutral...lug it down while driving and it sounds like a whole 'nuther animal.

Well, dang it, I'll do another then. Actually, it's quieter under power anyway. In fact, I was dissapointed in the loudness of the engine, but in a parkinglot and echoing between the buildings, it was a bad example.
But, I want you guys to hear it, and if I need to do it again to make it the right way to hear it, then... oh, well.

Windows up? Windows down? Fast acceleration? Slow?

you can put it in the little access hole above the accelerator. that will put the mic just inches away from cylinder number 8.

as for leonard are you going to do a little kareoke?

Gateman you must have me confused with someone else's truck. My truck has never cackled but MAY have had an idle knock BEFORE the mods. My sound bites just show how much better the truck sounds in general. The last sound file in the list is of the truck shifting through the 1200-2000 range. Right at the end I took her to about 2800. Here is the link;

In fact "driving after tank and fuel rail mods.mp3" may be the cleanest sounding PSD I've heard to date.

Bob-

you know I wasn't trying to come off like a naysayer...just as I knew that you really wouldn't feel "put upon" to do another recording...

I'd really like to hear you try to make the engine cackle like the other fella (sorry forgot name) that had a the very good cackle sound while driving down the road.

Before you run out and do the recording, take a minute and listen to the way the other guy did his rpm, throttle input etc...and see if we can duplicate; if nothing else, duplicate the conditions and engine speed.

then I'll leave you alone

I think he put his mic in the drivers footwell?? maybe in a grommet hole??

thanks man~

I stuck my mic under the hood and wraped it in pipe insulation to eliminate wind noise;

Bob, You did a good job isolating the motor sounds for having stacks. I could here the sounds. It bothered me that I still had some sounds, a little clattery at times and intermittant faint knock that gets higher frequency with speed (mph). Mine's definitely much better, since the mods, but there's still room for improvement. My main goals are mileage and LONGEVITY, the latter I know I won't get with out of place noises. I'll try to get some .wav files up to post.

my truck sounds EXACTLY contemplating before the tank mods. Same idle knock and all. I dont notice any cackle at the rpm range everyone talks about. also have a engine surge at idle in Park.

The latest wav is on the site now. http://dieselsite.com/miscprod/sounds.htm

I varied the speeds and rpms. When you hear it sound as if it shuts off, I'm cruising. It never dropped below 40mph for this test and rpms we in the 1300-2200 range except for the end when I got on it.
