Pat's air?

This is probably a stupid question, but what does the "Pat's air" refer to in these discussions? I must have missed the post that it started in.

"Pats air" refers to what another member found when diesel fuel is subjected to high negative pressure (vacuum) he found it released a great deal of air/gas that would not redially re-absorb into the fuel.
ON EDIT Pat, wherever you are we miss ya.

pwrstrokeme,
If you start HERE(1/26/02 post) which is a threaded link and go to the flat mode and read as long as you can stand it and preferably to the date of the link below, but that might be asking a tad much will give you the background. Pay particular attention to the experiment Pat Dolan described in his 1/27/02 post at 5:39P.M. whose results are reported HERE.
I use the terms Pat's Air to refer to entrained air (that's not dissolved microscopic, invisible or visible free air) and Hutch's Air is free non entrained air either invisible microscopic free air or visible free air and is basically in my view dissolved air). In my terminology Pat's Air is for the most part incompressible since it resides within the fuel Hydrocarbon matrix of molecules and takes up no physical space as such, whereas Hutch's Air is highly compressible since it occupies physical space in the fuel. Leaving the compressibility aside a simplistic view might be a wet sponge. The water held naturally within the sponges physical structure is like Pat's Air ... squeeze the sponge and the water that comes out is like Hutch's Air. It's a lot more complex than that and I don't understand the exact processes as it relates to diesel fuel since I have found very little in open sources to help explain the exact processes involved.
Others may use the terms slightly or very differently, but at least in my case you know how I use them.
Hope that helps some,
Larry

Larry, I prefer to think of the "free air" (hutch gas) and "Pat's air" this way, you know how you feel about one or two hours after eating at Taco Bell , well that pressure building in your lower extremity is "Pats gas", it's nornal and not a problem till it's released, when it is released it becomes "hutch's gas or air" and is a problem when mixed with the air we breath , as long as "Pat's gas" stays inside and is not VISIBLE or FREE it's not a problem

ROTFLOL Yep it's that stinky Pat's and Hutch's air thing ... I'm cool with Pat's air it's your air I have a problem with , but I won't go there right now and leave that between those of us who suffered thru the day to day grind or have taken the time to wade thru the thousands of posts in the "MPG and Cackle" thread.
BTW why is your "Air" causing all these problems in haul_n_horses2 and FMTRVT's Dahl filters you got your MoJo working on them

I dunno, I'd like to get my hands on one of those and have a look. I guess it's a dumb question but, you guys have put the clear hose on BEFORE the pre filter and looked to make sure the fuel is going into the Dahl "air free"?
I could use a factory fuel pump to test several things I'm farting around with, anybody got a good spare?

I think haul_n_horses2 and FMTRVT have put clear hoses everywhere, but they need to address exactly what they did.

Now is that a lead in. I got Dukes pump working but first in line is Jack and there are a couple of things I would like to do with Dukes pump before letting it go, but if you could convince Oley (Knuckledrager) to at least send me the pump portion of his bad pump... the whole pump less the mounting bracket and aluminum cylinder which I can't use would be simplier. He destroyed his pump o-rings but I have developed a procedure to take these apart and not destroy the o-rings and have a good set from Rusty's pump that I can use. I would be willing to put a pump together, test it, provide the data from my testing and shoot that pump off to you for testing. As long as the cylinders inside the pump aren't scored too bad these things can be repaired at some level of performance. PM me if you can get something set up ... I now have enough pump pieces I can maybe fixed one another one to at least use for testing and if you know of any trashed pumps, I'm in the market.
