Wierd Charging Problem
#1701203 - 03/13/04 11:41 AM

Maybe you guys can help me out with this one -

'99 F-350 won't charge.

- 3rd new alternator, so they've ruled that out.
- Battery light does not come on when ignition is turned on.
- Constant 12 volts to the orange wire on Alternator
- 12 volts present at the green/red wire on alternator with ignition on.
- Fuses 20, 23, and 6 in the distribution box are good.
- Fuses 21 and 29 under the steering column are good.
- There are no broken wires.

When the truck is running, the gauge on the dash shows 13+ volts, but when I hook up the voltmeter to the battery(s) I only get 11.8 volts.

Both batteries are brand new.

This one's got me stumped, and any information you could provide is greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Ken

Broken wire or connection at either end of the wire between Alt. and battery. Get a temp. wire and run it from the alt. to the batt. and check you voltage.

Have you checked for squirrels chewing on wiring? (on edit) you said you checked for broken wiring, so that's probably not it.

Check THIS THREAD for info on charging circuit. It turns out that a squirrel had chewed a wire in two on Dakota6gun's truck, and the alternator field wasn't getting any juice to make the alternator charge.

The circuit for the battery light (should come on when you turn on the key) goes thru the ignition switch, so a bad ign switch could be your problem.

You should also check the voltage at the output terminal on the alternator. If you get 13+ volts there and not at the batteries, then it points to the wire from the alt to the batteries.

Good luck.

What happen in the first place that you changed the alternator (or they) Who is they, if you don't mind. I now it sounds very simple but, is the pulley possibly spinning on the shaft? I have the wiring diagrams for my 2000. So far the colors are matching your description.
I am still reading. The more I drink the loooonger it takes to read.
If I can answer your question about the dash light I will let you know. Like the other guy said take a look at the ignition switch and wires.

I have a Ford test procedure to test the dash lamp and internal voltage regulator. Pretty simple. If you can use it let me know. Remember my info is from 2000 model year manuals.

Thanks for the help guys!

I spent about a hour on the truck today, checked all the harnesses, wires, voltages. No bad connections, etc. It didn't make sense - there's voltage where it needs to be, but the alternator isn't putting out anything. So, before I tore the ignition switch out, I jiggled the connection on the top of the alternator with the engine running, the engine slowed down and the voltage spiked. Bingo! The plug that goes on the top of the alternator had a bent pin on the inside, and it wasn't making contact with the terminal(s) on the alternator.

It just seems too simple......

Thanks again!

Make sure your GPR is not burnt closed.

The PCM doesn't allow battery charging for the first two minutes after the truck is started.

Not true.

On single alternator setups, there is NO connnection between the PCM and charging system. On DUAL alternator setups, the SECOND alternator is controlled by the PCM, but the primary alternator is not PCM controlled.

Learned this from my 99 Service CD while investigating the charging system for Dakota6gun a while back.
