Serpentine belt again!!

Bust another belt today. Not even 1500 miles. Changed whole tensioner and idler wheel last time. Alternator/water pump/aircon all seem to be turning freely. Any ideas what is causing the problem? The last time the 112" belt wouldnt fit, so used a 112 1/2", which went on easily. Should I try a 113"?

Ford has made a modification set for the serpentine. It includes a tensioner, a belt, a belt guide to fasten under the vacuum pump and an upgraded idler.
Look at this chain: http://forums.thedieselstop.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=UBB28&Number=1228992&page=&view=&sb=5&o=&vc=1
Good luck Torstein

113" will not fit. I used 1/4" spacers under alternator and am running 113" belt. I was having problems finding 112.5" in my area.

One thing to check is the idler pulleys. After many miles they will develop a ridge on one side of the pulley, there only plastic. If the belt hits the ridge it can throw the belt off or eat up one or more groves on the belt. Doe a search for idler pulley's. I think "Icanfixall" found a place that has steel pulley's.

It is unfortunate that you guys need longer belts, there has to be a problem somewhere. One thing just brought to my attention recently is there are several different numbers of ridges in the belt face ie 4, 5, 6, ensure you are given the right one for your truck and all your pulleys with the ridges are the same number. Flat pulleys are only for the back side of the belt. The only thing which would make the length different would be an exchanged appliance with the wrong pulley installed ie an alternator, vacuum pump, power steering pump or if the engine was a rebuild the crankshaft pulley. I have posted several times about the cut out in the idler next to the tensioner, it must be aligned to facilitate the rotation of the tensioner sufficient to allow installation of the belt. It would help if the diameter measurements of the pulleys was taken and posted this could indicate which pulley etc is the one out of size, just a thought.

My unit was stock with the latest tensioner from FORD. All indications are that no changes were made to any pulleys. Stock belt was 112.5 x 6 ribs. The 112.5 belt would fit very snug, VERY SNUG. I needed to change belts one day and was having problems in my area to find a 112.5 belt. FORD, NAPA, PEP BOYS, AUTOZONE, KRAGEN, and any place else I went to did not have that size. I was told by at least two places that that size was not manufactured any more. Since I was desperate, (needed belt that day) I opted for the 113 which was readily available. The challenge was to make it fit. Since the alternator was the easiest to modify I keep adding washers under it until the belt was a snug fit. 1/4" was what it measured out to be and I had aluminum spacers cut for it. Been like that for about 4 years with no problems and I can get a belt(113) anytime.

I agree with the belt length as I have a diff. pulley on my alt and my belt is longer than stock. There are 3 belts for 93 and 94 model year at least that is what I have found. Dont know the lengths just know that with the diff pulley none fit. Yes I am changing the pulley back, but remember there are two Ford factory pulleys available as well and a boat load of aftermarket pulleys on new alt. If your belt is braking though then something is locking up or ripping it depending on how its braking or tearing. The tension pulley should (when pulled up to install new belt) come up all the way and allow the belt to slip on with some ease. All this is what Ford mechanics have told me so dont blame me if its wrong, but the pulley I do know is true.

you put on new tensioner and pulley--the alignment pin can be put in a diff index out of place very easy---------- also check the bearing on the idler--take it off and feel it-if dry-replace-when get hot have had them drag excessively--also the same for the alt bearing---and im not playing with ya----
