Banks, ATS, Hypermax... Why the price difference
#1517752 - 12/06/03 06:54 PM

Why is there such a price difference between these units. The Hypermax lists for 1500 while the ATS is 2500 and the Banks is 2500+. I know that the Hypermax isn't a wastegated unit, but do I really need it if I am not commuting. I tow about 80% of the time so I shouldn't need a wastegated unit right? Can anyone else chip in some information!

well,on the waste gate, you need one.It keeps the boost pressure under control.Too much boost, over 10-12PSI for factory turbo, and the motor starts to sustain damage slowly. The waste gate just opens up a second pathway for the exhaust gasses to flow though around the turbine.

Here is what I learned when I was shopping for a turbo system for The Enterprise.

Hypermax - non wastegated, which means at low speeds it does not produce massive amounts of boost, but is sized so that at higher rpms (high way speed) it will achieve the correct amount of boost.

ATS - wastegated system. Meaning that the boost comes on strong right from the get go. Basically the turbo is a little oversized. Downside to this is you have bleed off some pressure so that you don't over boost the engine, this is done with the wastegate. The ATS system is priced lower than the Banks system, this is because it does not come with as many options as the Banks kit right out of the box. With it coming without a trans controller, I would have needed to purchase a new PCM from Ford so that the tranny could handle the added power. I would also have to purchase the gauges (boost and pyro). This seemed to me like a nickle and dime thing... I'm a 'one price' kind of guy. Just give it all to me up front and let me go about my way.

Banks - Wastegated. Comes with everything a guy will need to set up the system (gauges, trans control and complete exhaust front to rear). This is where the higher price comes in to play. Because you get all the goodies with this kit you really don't need to add anything to complete the package. Not to say the ATS system is incomplete but it's just nice getting the entire package in one sitting IMHO. This is why I went with a Banks System. I have ridden in a members truck that has the ATS system and it was pulling a pretty heavy load at the time, I would say it performed on the same playing field as my Banks system. The big seller as I mention for me was that the Banks system came with everything to round out the system. This say to me... this company is thinking ahead, so what else are they thinking ahead about?

I did not even consider the hypermax system because I wanted the boost to come on strong right off the line, as I like a drag car effect. I'm a jack-rabbit driver, in that I like to take off from a dead stop with a good push in the small of the back. Would I have been happy with the Hypermax turbo system? Probably, but I did not want to be guessing about what I purchased later on down the road, this is another reason they were not really considered. I know me all too well, in that I would have been always wondering if I made the correct choice...
