It should be around 40 psi.

Uh-oh........we have 2 Freightliner-chassis buses with 12-valve 5.9's & a Spartan pusher with an ISB, & neither idles over 20-25psi.

This is according to the Dodge truck gauge cluster not a test gauge. Take it for what it's worth.

When in doubt get a mechanical gauge its the only way to tell you true oil pressure. I'am surprise your not used to low oil pressure if you work with 2 stroke Detroits

Somebody told me you should have atleast 10psi oil pressure for every 1000 rpm so the pressure your seeing should be close. What type of oil are you using it might be time for a oil change.

My fake a$$ guage pegs at 100 when I start it and runs 60-80 the rest of the day. I worry if it gets down to 40.

I agree with Kenworth on this one. A mechanical gauge is the only way to get a really accurate reading. Once you know the real numbers then you can use your dashboard gauge as a point of reference. I'm seriously doubting the 40 psi at hot idle number mentioned previously.

These ARE mechanical gauges--Stewart-Warners. We run 15W-40 Mobil Delvac.

The 6V71 has about 20-25psi at hot idle (SAE-40W Delo).

How many miles on the engines ?
Do you notice the valve train is louder than normal ?
Is the oil feed line kinked, clogged or leaking ?

How far does the pressure line from the engine to the gauge have to run are these rear mounted engines or forward mounted engines ?

What is the pressure like doing freeway speeds ?

I would say if the engines haven't seized up from low oil pressure I wouldn't worry about it some oil pressure is better than none

The Jimmy has about 800K on a 6V71.
The others have:
Spartan: 40K miles/3800 hours
Freightliner 168: 65,000 miles
Freightliner 169: 59,000 miles
(neither FL has an hour meter)

Spartan is a pusher (and a 24V), the others are front-engines (and 12V).

Can't hear much in the pusher (engine is well-muffled...and 30' away); neither FL seems louder than normal.

All 3 run 60-80psi on the highway.

If you got that much at highway speeds I wouldn't be too worried I have seen old big cam Cummins with less than that. If your worried keep the oil clean and changed early I never use Mobile brand oil is it dino or synthetic ?

The Mobil is not synthetic, we use Motorcraft or Purolator filters.
