How many miles can you get out of a 6.5
#1589239 - 01/13/04 10:08 PM

The local gas stations 3500HD tow trucks engine gave up the ghost the 6.5 injested itself at 230,000kms 147,000miles. The mechanics at the shop said its amazing the Chev diesel went that many kilometers so they are not surprised. A 7.3 IDI will go 300,000kms 187,000kms before replacement I know one that made 400,000kms 249,000kms but supposidy that is a once in a life time for a B.C. Truck.

So are 6.5s that weak that they wear out faster than a old IDI the engine in the tow truck has probably seen hard use pulling vehicals all its life.

The engine in my truck died at 301,000kms the 93 Fact turbo in the diesel shop died of cavitation at 280,000kms as for Dodge haven't seen a Dodge truck make it past 250,000kms the body and wheels fall off.

I don't know how you guys in the states can nurse a truck 300,000miles when truck here with half that mileage are off to the wreckers because they are worn out.

not a turbo and not a 6.5, but we had a 6.2 3/4 ton 86 chevy van. the rear diff was rebuilt once before we sold it, the trans was original at time of sale, the engine was in great shape, never been apart, egr system disabled from day 1, had 400,xxx plus when we sold it, and it now is on the 5th owner i think [i saw it in a parking lot one day, and the odo was showing 800,xxx. i don't know what was done with it after the 3rd owner [was at 550,xxx then all original engine no rebuild]

we also had a 90 k1500 with the 6.2. engine lasted good [oil cooler lines all leak on this engine design - 6.2&6.5 ] and it had a little under 350,000 on it when it was sold in early 99. trans however, was on its second....

both engines ran mobil1 5w30 engine oil. never any problems with that oil...

i did have a 6.5TD but i only went to 86,000 in a little over 5 years, and only problems i had were oil cooler lines, and emmission related [egr sticking/cat plugging] which was fixed by blocking the egr and removing the cat, and the oil cooler lines undercoated the truck [would leak 1 liter out every 6,000km]

Well, I dont know about the 6.5's but I had a 1982 GMC p/u with a 6.2L (no turbo) that I purchased in 1992. I traded it in on my current truck in 2002 with 405,000 miles on the odometer.
I bought it with ~22?,000 miles on it.
Same engine, 3 transmissions and an assortment of water pumps, alternators, etc.
The engine still ran strong and was getting about 17 mpg on the freeway.
While the engine was still going well, the truck itself was falling apart.
It was the grace of God that kept the front suspension from falling off!

That was a really good truck for me. I guess I lucked out on that one.
I just hope my current truck can post the same kind of numbers.

Rich.

In looking for my truck, I asked family members who own a heavy diesel shop (that also do pickups) and they consistently see the 6.5 TD lunch themselves at about 150k. Some go farther but most dont get over 180k. Guess the 6.5 cant stand up to the turbo where as the unturbo'ed 6.2 will run on forever. Much like I hope mine will do. Heck other than glowplugs, one clutch, two starters, and a truckload full of belts, mine is as it was the day it left the dealer lot.

Today I found out the true kilometerage on the engine it had 315,000kms (195,741mi) on it the heads were rebuilt twice. The thing that gave out was the bottom end fell out of it the main caps cracked supposidy a GM problem.

I was never a big fan of GM 6.2 or 6.5s they have a odd sound when they idle they sound like marbles rolling in a drum. I drove a 3500 lwb dually flatdeck 4x4 stacked a cord of firewood on it roughly 3500lbs I wasn't overly impressed with the power. One thing about it the truck rode nice and smooth didn't ride like a tank like a Ford.

Are 6.5s a IDI engine I was talking to the mechanics at the gas station the heads look similar to a 7.3 IDI with precups.

A buddy of mine has a 92 chevy diesel with 265K original engine and trans that runs great. I just rib him constantly because I crush him when it comes topulling a load. He's nowhere near me, but his old engine still runs great.

the colder climate, and the constant mountain use do add up to wear on the engines, but whats more normal is for underside components to rust out, and fail catastophically. I can do my mercedes-into-4x4 conversions cheap here 'cause 80% of the time the motors outlast the bodies!

as far as the GM's go, I've heard ( no idea on the truth of it) that the crank breather system has a problem with retaining moisture in the engine. If thats true, the 'northwest' climate would kill them off early from water contaminated oil. might explain why some last & some dont, even in the same area, as warm up/driving style would change the moisture content in the crank case dramatically.

Oh man!!! I better go get rid of my piece of junk truck before the wheels fall off

No wait a minute, I "baby" my truck by not driving it in Canada

The 6.2L and 6.5L are IDI engines, which limits their power ability somewhat.

The two biggest factors that can cause an early death for either engine are the harmonic balancer and the oil cooler lines.

If the harmonic balancer wears out (rubber starts squishing out) and the owner doesn't know to replace it, it can eventually lead to a broken crankshaft. Most of the time the crank breaks and pulls the block apart. Not a good thing.

The other weak spot are the oil cooler lines. GM decided to run all engine oil through a couple of rubber and aluminum lines to the radiator and back. The lines tend to wear out prematurely, and if the owner doesn't notice any oil leaks, they won't get replaced. What can happen is one day you're tooling down the interstate, one of the oil lines bursts, you don't notice that you you've suddenly lost oil pressure, and all of a sudden, you're running your diesel at 70 mph with no oil. Before long, the engine is toast. I've seen/heard of this happening several times.

I replaced my cooler lines with tractor hydraulic hoses. Just a little bit better than the factory stuff.

If a guy knows about the weaknesses on these or any other engines, he can keep 'em going a long time.

There's an article on thedieselpage.com right now about a 400,000 + mile 6.2L truck.

It does seem like the 6.5L's don't seem to last as long, but I think that may be in part that 6.5L owners work their trucks harder than 6.2L guys do. A lot of 6.2L's are still running around in 1/2 ton grocery getters (probably the best use of a 6.2L there is), while a lot of 6.5L's are running around in 1 ton 4x4's pulling large trailers.

I will admit the GM diesels sound very odd. They sound like a sick gasser. Drove a few and would never consider owning one. GUTLESS!!!!

OK, I think I'll check the balancer & oil cooler lines on Liz's K-5 tomorrow.

And the 6.2 sucks.

Saw with my own eyes a 97 6.5 K3500 crew cab welders truck getting tuned up at Jannetty Racing with over 300k on the original engine. The interior was absolutely trashed but the engine ran fine.

Over 250,000km's on my old goat and I was driving it today in BC Canada. No wheels or body on it. Maybe I should post a pic.
It is quite nice actually, I don't have to wash my truck or buy tires for it now. Got a little cold when the body fell off, but I just have a big chew of pemican, tighten up the hood on my sealskin parka and keep on truckin.
