DT466 performance upgrades?
#2108969 - 11/23/04 09:02 PM

Can anyone tell me where to turn to coax more power out of a 05' DT466e engine?

You need a plug in module. Bill Corhon is the one to talk to. He burned a lot of chips for us. Keep looking for him, hopefully someone will give a web address for you.

Check the turbo actuator arm as they have been having lots of problems with them becoming frozen and thus no turbo boost. Generally these engines are more responsive than the older ones but they do have lots of issues with them. If you do not have an intake heater you are going to be getting on installed. They also want to add an oil heater. Lots of problems with cold runability.

It is getting boost and the engine is a 05' in a CXT with 3000miles, I believe that the engine is running the way International intended it, but my problem is it needs a new flash for the ECM. The engine has alot of potential, International justs wants too many $ to unlock that potential.

Did you spec-out the truck, or was it on the lot?

did IH say whether or not the truck could be ordered with a more powerful DT?

If not, it's because there's something they're trying to protect in the driveline.

What you have to remember is that a M/D, becuase of its' weight & tires, has a much more difficult time breaking the wheels lose and lowering the strain on the driveline, like a pick-up truck. When you send 600lbs TQ through the driveline, there's little or no wheel slippage to relieve the stress. Therefore, the driveline takes a lot more beating.

If it has an Allison auto that is where the power disappears.

It just is not safe to merge onto a fast moving intertate without a trailer, let alone with the 36' trailer we just had built for it! Very tough to accelerate from 40 to 75.

In the CXT, it's rated 220 HP. Dry weight of the truck is around 14K. It ain't a Kenny Bernstein machine.

With only 3000 miles on it the engine hasn't broken in yet. Let it break in and the engine will loosen up and provide you better power and MPG. Also, I think the ECM has a setting which doesn't allow for full power untill a certain mileage is reached. I could be wrong but I've heard that before.

One issue that misleads folks about some of the ECM 466's is that
they have a max speed governor in high gear preventing the engine from opening up to full RPM in high gear. Until you get used to it, you have the feeling that the engine is gutless, but it has really
gone flat as a max speed control.

AT least mine won't go beyond about 2100 rpm in top gear though it wraps to 2600 in all the other gears. With the ratios that I have this effefctively means it won't go over 65 MPH.

Mine just runs up to ~2200 and just sits there against a governor. Feels like there's tons more power there.
