Starting Problem- 1983 Mazda truck-Perkins 2.0
#537394 - 11/30/01 12:53 AM

I have a 1983 Mazda B2200 Truck that has a 2.0 Perkins Diesel in it. Lately it has been almost impossible to start at 60 degrees(takes about 5 crankings with a hot battery). The glow plugs (4) all check good and the power to them checks at 12V good, also the diesel fuel is good with a new fuel filter and just drained the sediment bowl. When I turn it off you can crank it immediately and it will start OK, but wait a few minutes and hard starting (even if it is warmed up.) Also the filter was replaced last year. The truck usually starts good to down to about 10 degrees(without plugging it up) and has been a good little motor about 40 MPG but not a lot of power. Any ideals or help would be appreciated as I don't have a clue. After the truck is started it seems to run great with a little smoke until it warms up like it has always done. Thanks

There are two possible problems, they are; the fuel is running back to the tank due to a bad check valve, or you have an air leak in the fuel system. Try tightining the filter. I have never worked on an engine like yours, but the principle is the same.

Thanks fordiesel69 I will check for air leaks first thing. Also does anybody know where the check valve is usually located in the fuel line? I sure hope it isn't built into the pump. The fuel pump on this truck looks bigger than the one the PSD.

Haven't had a chance to check the engine out yet.(Short daylight hours and long work hours). I did notice the other day that it has a "FORD" sticker on top of the engine.

Boy I sure wish Ford would offer this 2.0 Perkins in it Ranger trucks, put a turbo on it and two small batteries instead of one big monster. I would put one on order today.

The truck has 240,000 hard miles on it and never had the valve cover off it. At low RPM's it will still out pull my 1993 Ranger truck. Never had a clutch in it either.

More than likely the check valve is built into the injection pump or the lift pump. If all else fails, disconnect the lift pump and install a low pressure 5-14psi electric fuel pump. You won't need a regulator and 7psi would be ideal. That way when you turn the key on, it will begin pumping fuel and as soon as the glowplugs are ready you can start it. This will only work if you have a return system and most diesel have a return system.

Also, if you can give me the manufacture of the inj pump it will help me a lot. If the check valve is bad, that is no problem, go electric. Just make sure there are no leaks.

Thanks for the information. Fordiesel69 it has a diesel KiKi (Zexel) VE injector pump in it (I heard that Bosch had bought this company out recently). I pulled the pump out and took it to Acme Diesel to have it tested and to get and estimate of price to fix. The price may be more than I am wiling to spend, they haven't contacted me yet. Thanks. Fordiesel69 that sounds like a good ideal on installing another pump.

Addition- Went to Mazda dealer and by looking at the diagram of the fuel system the truck doesn't have a transfer(lift pump in it) it does have a hand mechancial pump to use to prime it if it runs out of fuel.

I have an Excort with the Mazda diesel. It is a completely different engine than the engine in the 83-84 Ranger. Nevertheless, I have also had a hot starting problem with my Escort and never really figured it out. It starts easily when cold. My fuel filter is mounted high on the firewall and the fuel would have to flow uphill to leave the pump. I still don't know what causes it but it sure is hard on the starter.
