I'm checking into that myself. There is a 300hp BD3 injection pump for marine apps. Now if I can just get enough air into her without blowin the top off.......

If you go to a marine engine supply or to a shop where they rebuild and service the marine version of the 6.9 and 7.3 you will find several over the counter parts that will improve the HP of the automotive version of these engines

Ok guys just went to a web site called
Boatdiesel.com they have a listing for
every diesel marine motor with specs for each engine. No where to be found is Navistar nor IH as a marine engine.
What gives?

Hey guys,
I don;t think that International ever made a marine engine other than the 444 or powerstroke which they put in some newer pleasure boats. I can't say I have ever seen A 6.9 or 7.3 in a boat. Maybe I'm wrong.....

Mercury Marine used the 7.3 IDI, then later the powerstroke. I don't know for sure if they had different nozzles, but I think they were the same as in our trucks. Why do you want to change nozzles? The original nozzles and pump can put out enough to melt down the engine!

Hi

Both IH/Navstar 6.9 7.3 and GM Diesels are in Marine use,but when they are converted from automotive to marine the manufacture doing the converstion changes the name of the engine it will usually be (A Name) followed by 6.9 7.3 or T444.I've seen them advertised in magizines like Sail and Motor Boat,Passage Maker etc But I don't remember the manufacture's name

The specs. here are for the powerstroke engine. They haven't used the IDI engine since about 95, and it had a higher compression ratio than 15.5-1. They did use a different piston in the IDI that lowered the C.R. (I think) but it was still higher than a direct injection engine uses. If I remember correctly, the horsepower rating was 250 on the 7.3 IDI. Jay

The injection pump that you are talking about making 300 horse power is a db4 which is a four plunger pump whereas the stock is a db2 whick is a 2 plunger pump. All you guys talk about turning your pump up, and I have a 93 idi turbo that has a torque screw on it. Why not just back it out half a turn and only get the extra fuel when you need it? I was always told that turning up an ih would be the death of it. What gives, is that a myth, or, is it true.

I dont know if anybody else caught this, but the Marine Version runs at 3800 while the Automotive Version runs at 3250. That alone would be cause for a lot more Horse Power.

Yup, about 16.9% more HP at the same fuel delivery rate (cubic millimeters per stroke).

Yep shore did 88
Thats why after I seen the pitcure and stats
I figured the block was probably the only common thing between the street version vs. marine. I am sure the cam, heads and a few other items are differant

I think what we are neglecting to understand is that the marine application is not an automotive set-up. In marine applications, a diesel is expected to run for hours on end at a continuous rpm, be it 3800 or 1300rpm. Acceleration properties are irrelevant, all that is needed is the grunt to pull a 5 ton boat through heavy seas while hauling back a dozen 200# tuna. Yes, the HP is higher with that pump, however I'll bet it aint worth 'poop' in a truck, especially when you go to pull out with a trailer on your hitch.
