I used mine a lot this summer going across country through the mountains towing a 10K fifth wheel. There were a lot of times that I had to give it a little throttle to shut it off to maintain speed. I would recommend that you install a torque converter lock-up switch if you have an auto.

jarmstrong,

Save your brakes indeed! The new TurboBrake III for automatics also has an on demand torque converter lock-up for better braking plus an idle controller built in as well! JS.

I've got the Western diesel brake on my 6 speed and it works GREAT!!! I keep it on all the time, so city driving, towing or not, mountains or flat roads, it's on and working. It actually works better on a manual transmission because as you downshift, the rpms go back up and the brake has a chance to work some more. If the traffic is light while coming up to a stop light, I'll just let the exhaust brake slow me down. Most of time, the light will turn green before I have to stop and I only have to push the accellerator while never even touching my Ford brake pedel. I really like the WD brake and have had no complaints what-so-ever in the year+ time that it's been on my truck.

jarmstrong:

You asked how strong it is, and the answer depends on what you expect. If you have driven a jake on a heavy truck, you will be mighty dissappointed. The EBV is seriously limited in how much retardation it will generate. But, on balance, the WD works very smoothly and reliably.

I have the last version, and it was a hack-in to install (no access to proper connectors when needed to install) since appropriate pieces are not included - just instruction to cut and splice. Check the post above about getting one, since there seems to be a problem there.
