Fuel System

Two simple things need to be done here: Change the filter and purge any water that may have collected in the fuel tank.

Fuel Filter Changing

Tools needed:

  • Fuel Filter Wrench OR Two (2) - Vise-grips
  • 13mm open or closed wrench or deep socket

Parts needed:

  • Fuel filter
  1. With the 13mm wrench or socket, remove the two plastic coated nuts holding the black cover on the engine. (Suggest doing this while it is cool)
  2. Remove the black cover.
  3. There is a small yellow/green lever to the left and the rear of the black circle cap. This is the purge valve. It is easier to drain the tub now or getting fuel all over you. See purging the water from the fuel tank (next section) on how to do this.
  4. With the filter purged, using the wrench, take the black cap off by turning counter clockwise. (To the left). If you do not have a wrench, place one of the vise-grips on one of the fins sticking out from the center ring on the cap. Place the other on the fin directly opposite of it. Grab both grips like a large screw driver and turn counter clockwise. The cap should come off with a little force.
  5. Remove the old filter and o-rings from the tub.
  6. Make sure the tub is clean and free from debris.
  7. Place the new o-ring on the filter and drop the new filter in the tub. It can go generally only one way.
  8. Place the new gasket on the ring on the tub and screw the cap back on clockwise. Make sure the cap is secure.
  9. Replace the black cover on the engine and tighten the nuts back down. Start the engine. It is self priming so it should start pretty quickly or within a few cranks.
  10. The fuel filter is now changed!

Water Purging

Tools needed:

  • 13mm Wrench

Parts needed:

  • Small piece of hose
  1. With the 13mm wrench or socket, remove the two plastic coated nuts holding the black cover on the engine. (Suggest doing this while it is cool)
  2. Remove the black cover.
  3. There is a small yellow/green lever to the left and rear of the black circle cap. Place the hose on the small outlet near the lever and route the other end into a collection device. Push the yellow/green lever away and to the right to open the valve. Turn the key to the on position. Watch the runoff from the hose and turn off the key when diesel fuel starts to run out.
  4. Close the lever by pushing the lever to the right and towards you.
  5. Replace the black cover on the engine and tighten the nuts back down. Start the engine. It is self priming so it should start pretty quickly or within a few cranks.
  6. The fuel tank is now purged of water!
