Avoid the Propalyne Glycol based (Safety Orange) extended life coolants. They can tear up the cooling system.

From Carpentractor:

First off I would like to apologize if I had steered anyone wrong in the purchase of Regular Prestone Antifreeze. I was ill informed by a tech from the Prestone Technical Support Line in March of 1999. Apparently the Regular Prestone antifreeze does not meet Ford Specifications for the PowerStroke Diesel

Well with all the posts about the low silicate antifreeze that is required for the PSD I decided to call them again and make sure. The tech that I got on the phone really knew his stuff. He was more confident and had tons of technical knowledge on the Prestone product. I asked him about the Regular Prestone and he indicated that The Prestone antifreeze in the yellow bottle is in fact a high silicate antifreeze and may not be tolerated by the PSD. It is an automotive application typically. He further stated while it is charged with the same silicate as is the FW-16 some of the other additives in this antifreeze may present problems for the diesel application and thus is not recommended. He did tell me of a product that Prestone carries that is most definitely recommended that meets Ford Specification ESE-M97B44-A. http://www6.alliedsignal.com/business/tbsco/prestone.htm It's Called Prestone Heavy Duty Antifreeze. Stock #AF-977. He said that this antifreeze is less common and is probably the antifreeze that they supply Ford factories for the Diesels. He couldn't be certain if this was the exact product used in the factory line but he did say it met the Ford Specification exactly. It comes in a Black Bottle and is labeled Prestone Heavy duty Antifreeze. He further stated that this antifreeze is Ethylene Glycol based, is pre-charged with the FW-16 type additive and is absent of the additives in the Regular Yellow bottle Prestone that make the Yellow bottled stuff a high silicate antifreeze. He commented on the FW-16 type product that they charge the antifreeze with comparing it like Coke and Pepsi is to cola. He also confirmed that the additive was used to prevent cavitation damage and that it needed to be maintained throughout the life of the coolant. One other thing he did say is that you may not see it in your average auto store and that you may have to order it. He said it should be under $11.00 per gallon.

Prestone Tech Support. 1 (203) 830-7938 for more immediate access. If you want to spare the dime to Connecticut then Call Allied Signal and ask for the Prestone Branch. Once in the Prestone Branch ask for Tech Support. 1(800) 707- 4555 Takes almost 10 minutes as you pass thru all the automated responses to get to the Tech.
