ISSUE:

There are two different forward/reverse sun gears in production.  One type requires a retaining ring and the other does not.  The retaining ring is used to hold the input shell thrust washer in place on the input shell during assembly.

ACTION:

Some E4OD transmission have been built with a forward/reverse sun gear that does not require a retaining ring.  The sun gear has no groove for a retaining ring, Figure 1.  These transmissions are identified as model PRA-FA12, serial number 00157935 thru 00158019.  If internal transmission service is required for these units, replace the forward/reverse sun gear with the current service sun gear with retaining ring groove (E9TZ-7D063-A), Figure 2 and retaining ring (377300-S).

NOTE:

DO NOT REUSE THE FORWARD/REVERSE SUN GEAR IF THE SUN GEAR HAS NO RETAINING RING GROOVE.
