  • MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LAMP (MIL) - MIL ILLUMINATED WITH DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS) P1391, P1395 AND/OR P1396 STORED IN MEMORY - F-250 AND F-350 CALIFORNIA ONLY AND ECONOLINE - VEHICLES WITH 7.3L ENGINE
Publication Date: AUGUST 3, 1998

LIGHT TRUCK: 1997 F-250 HD, F-350
1997-98 ECONLINE

CALIBRATION:

Refer to Recalibration Cross Reference chart for applicable calibrations.

WARNING: THIS MODIFICATION IS AUTHORIZED ONLY FOR THE LISTED ENGINE.  PERFORMING THIS MODIFICATION ON OTHER ENGINE CALIBRATIONS IS UNAUTHORIZED AND COULD CREATE LIABILITY UNDER APPLICABLE FEDERAL OR LOCAL LAWS.

ISSUE:

Some 1997 7.3L DIT F-250/350 (California only) and Econoline vehicles may exhibit a check engine light on and possible Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) P1391, P1393, P1395, and/or P1396 stored in memory.  These vehicles may or may not exhibit other driveability symptoms such as hard starting, long crank time, no start, etc.

ACTION:

Refer to the following information when diagnosing these conditions.  Understanding the on-board diagnostics will help in diagnosing the above concerns.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

  1. Perform normal diagnostics found in the 1997 Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) On-Board Diagnostics II (OBD-II) Service Manual and service as required.
  2. As in all electrical circuits, clean and properly tighten connections as required.  The proper torque on the smaller nuts on the glow plug relay is 2.3-4.5 N-m (20-40 lb-in).  The proper torque on the relay's high current nuts and the shunt nuts is 6.2-7.3 N-m (55-65 lb-in).  When servicing the glow plug relay, make sure the appropriate nuts and washers are used.  Refer to the PC/ED Service Manual to verify that all three (3) sensing wires are in the proper location (Figure 1).  After making any repairs to the glow plug system where any codes are present, be sure to clear the codes and verify the repair with the Key On Engine Running (KOER) glow plug test.

  3. If the concern still exists, reprogram the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) using the Service Bay Diagnostic System (SBDS) or New Generation Star (NGS) Tester.  Refer to the following Recalibration Cross Reference Chart for the correct PCM calibration.

NOTE: PCM REPLACEMENT IS NOT AUTHORIZED BY THIS TSB.  REFER TO THE POWERTRAIN CONTROL/EMISSIONS DIAGNOSIS (PC/ED) SERVICE MANUAL FOR APPROPRIATE DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES IF PCM HARDWARE CONCERNS EXIST.

Obtain an Authorized Modifications Decal (FPS 8262 - orderable through DOES II, 25/pkg) and list the date, dealer number, and summary of alterations performed.  Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information Decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications Decal.  Clean the area, install the decal, and cover it with a clear plastic deal shield.
