Re: Guy sues GM for overheated LMM Duramax
Is LLM Duramax a package? I don't know much about the Duramax.
Have a buddy who's work got him one to tow heavy trailers for ag deliveries. It's a 04 or 05 Duramax w/ Allison. He does stop and go & freeway travel. He doesn't tow at 70+ MPH though....and it's not that hot here all that often- this year was the exception- 95F by 11am.
So this dude is trying to keep up with a Dodge powered Cummins. He has no idea if that Cummins has been modified from stock.
I drive school bus. I've driven 5.9L, 8.3L Cummins powered buses as with new 7.3L Cat engines. On an average day, they can be about 26K lbs, if not more. The 5.9L in bus application (what we have at least) doesn't do well for long stretches w/ hills. It lags behind the 8.3L and 7.3L buses. And these buses have a manufactured GVWR between 30-34K. This guy should be happy that his pickup can pull 20K.
Most of the time, they are not designed to work day in and day out at those weights. And if they do, the person driving is usually (reasonable). If you look at the size of the radiator on a medium duty truck vs a pickup. Even the Duramax in the bigger med. duty Chev trucks have bigger radiators!
As soon as we get an alarm going off, we're rechecking the gauges. When the water temp jumps, I have the heaters turned on to try to help as I'm looking for a spot to pull over.
Maybe it's just me..... but is this guy expecting too much from his diesel?
