Mine used to do the same thing. My process of work was, Check heater conrol valve, remove heater control valve, add cardboard to front of rad. flush the radiator, moddify egr to elimate flash boiling.
Finally put in new head gaskets and studs, works perfectly now.

Sounds like this post may be right. You are going down Same road. Order yourself some studs so it will be fixed right.
