In practice they are a lot like air shocks but they do not put all the stress on the shock mounts like air shocks do. You can set them up to fill from any air compressor with schrader valve or valves like on your tires or you can add onboard air, even add leveling valves so they will automatically adjust as you load and unload the truck.
