Really, you can run any kind of a filter. Just build a box around a common filter and pressurize that box. You can seal that box against the hood and the scoop regardless of the direction it comes from.
I would think a forward facing scoop would do more in pressurizing the air box and boosting performance.
A cowl induction set up like in NASCAR is certainly that way as a way of restricting power. It would be cooler air available to the engine compared to getting hot air from near the radiator. Certainly at idle and all, pulling air from someplace other than near the radiator would be a good thing in the E's.
