the last time I had my egr valve out I noticed it was actually pretty clean but when I pried it all the way open it hung up. i moved the valve open and closed while spraying it down with brake clean then did the same using graphite spray, let a couple of coats dry while held open seems to be good since. I don't think its so much the carbon all over causing problems as gunge on the valve stem binding hings up
