Transmission Problem using new Mercon V?

My neighbor owns a 2002 F350, he changed his transmission fluid at 20,000 miles, 45,000 miles using mercon. At 70,000 miles he put the new Mercon V in and now at 81,000 miles his transmission is trashed. He never towed anything heavier than his riding lawn mower. He is convinced that the new Mercon V Killed his tranny. Coincidence? or is the only thing new about Mercon V the label? I was about to change my transmission fluid using the new Mervon V but now I am a little freaked out about using it. Anyone heard of this happening? Anyone used the new stuff and put on any real mileage yet? What can you use besides the new Mercon V?
