That's outdated information.
Ford has discontinued MERCON. Sometime before that they reformulated MERCON V to make it compatible with transmissions that required MERCON.
MERCON V is now the right fluid for the 4R100.
Did MERCON V kill the trans? I have no idea without inspecting the trans.
