I understand you don't have lots of money to throw around, but as mentioned above, you can get a multi meter pretty cheap (a lot cheaper than buying a bunch of parts you don't need) to see which side is the problem.

There's a good chance that the plug connector inside the valve cover just came loose. If that's the problem you can make a ship to stick in the plug to keep it from coming loose again without replacing the harness.

If you're against spending the money on a meter you could always just pull both valve covers and do a visual inspection to see if the plugs are tight.
