Use science, not old trucker's tales.
If you're truly worried that the engineers that designed the engine don't know squat about what they do for a living, take an OA at 5k. If that's good go to the recommended interval in the owner's manual. Then take another OA to see where the oil's at then. If you use bypass filtration & a good synthetic, you could get 20k out of it, but make sure you use an OA to tell you when the additives are done.
Oil is no longer "cheap insurance". Yes you need to maintain the truck, but why waste money when you don't have to?
