I have been pulled over by the MN DOT before. I was towing the 14K gvw dump trailer with my wifes Excursion. When he walked up the truck/trailer the first thing he did was peek in the trailer to see what I had in it. Being there was only some materials in it he didn't weigh me. He then looked at the gvw of the vehicle and trailer. If over 10K lbs total you have to be DOT complaint if used for work.
What he did do is give me a bunch of warnings.
Expired tab on trailer
Non working break away breaks
No health card
No letters on work vehicle
I was really nice and acted as stupid as possible and he let me go with no tickets. Thought there was one or two more warnings but it's been at least three years ago.
In all my travels in MN have never seen a truck and trailer outside of work pulled over by the DOT. They target semi's, straight axle large trucks, and pick ups with work trailers.
A friend of mine transports cars for a living and he's never been touched by the DOT in any state.
