Last week I upped my E350 from 9500# to 10,900#. They changed it right there as they renewed my insurance. No fuss.
Back when I bought it, the reg'd GVW was too high. It was net weight + 50% which was much higher than the GVWR. The agent refused to make any changes as she had the slip from the scale station right there. A few days later, I took a picture of the door jamb decal, printed it, and took it with me to get insurance at another broker's office. (No scale slip this time). They changed the reg. on the spot to match the decal.
IMO, the difficulty in making these changes depends on who is working the counter that day. They are used to people requesting dubious changes. If they decide to get defensive, you don't have much recourse but to refine your request and try to impress a fresh face next time.
