limit - Definitions from Dictionary.com

Professional drivers, at least those driving Class 8 rigs, go slower to be more profitable. Their time is more valuable when they're better-disciplined drivers who do the math. Example:

60 mi/hr:
Daily billable miles: 600
Daily revenue: $750
Fuel consumption: 6 mi/gal
Daily fuel cost: $400
Gross daily profit: $350
Daily wear & tear on truck, tires, driver: 600 miles' worth

75 mi/hr:
Daily billable miles: 750
Daily revenue: $937.50
Fuel consumption: 5 mi/gal
Daily fuel cost: $600
Gross daily profit: $337.50
Daily wear & tear on truck, tires, driver: 750 miles' worth

It's just an incidental side benefit that they're safer, more relaxed at the end of the day, retain more of their hearing, buy fewer tires and their trucks last longer and depreciate less.
I actually agree with you Dr. Cambell. Let's look at yearly figures

100,000 mi a year, 5mpg, $4 gal fuel= $80,000 annual fuel cost
100,000 mi a year, 7mpg, $4 gal fuel= $57,140 annual fuel cost. $22,860 more in your pocket and a lot less wear on truck. Now when you figure that most drivers actually run closer to 150,000 mi a year and that fuel is at about $4.60ish a gal. is makes no $en$e to run 75mph.

I slowed down to 65mph when fuel hit $1.50 and now I'm at 58-62 depending on load/wind conditions and I average 8mpg +. I run the same mi as I did at 75, except now it is less stressful and I can run longer with out stopping as much. I know there will be some drivers who will chime in that their truck gets it's best mpg at 70-75mph but until the law of physics is proved wrong I won't beleive them. I have had several different trucks with different configurations and ALL got better mpg at lower speeds. I have to go now as I have an extra $22k to take to the bank.
