Before you get too excited, most of the time all that's needed is a pulley bearing and the compressor is OK. When the A/C and defroster is off the compressor clutch is not locked up, so that bearing is turning whenever the engine is running. Also, the magnetic engagement clutch brushes can sometimes rub when the clutch is not engaged and they make a slight noise which is normal.
