I was at the Ford dealer a few months ago looking doing the the same thing.
Seeing if an '08 exhaust would work on my 2000.
Conclusion: As best I can tell, that from the muffler back, it should fit. However, as you pointed out, the '08 has different hangers, but the locations on the frame seem to be the same. Mind you, these dimensions were all taken from a not-so-calibrated eyeball.

Also, make sure you have a muffler shop in your area that can handle 4" pipe. My neighborhood shop wanted to use 3" (all they could handle) and slip fit it into my 3.5" and "fill" the rest with weld. YUCK!!!

If you attempt this, please keep us updated, please.
Also, part numbers would help too.
