Shift anomaly

The following problem is on my bro-in-law's '01 F250 4x4 ~200k...after starting he put it in D to drive to work. On acceleration the engine revved but forward motion was very limited and the OD light flashed on and off. Reverse, 1st and 2nd acted normal. The fluid level was good and the shifter seems normal (not sloppy). Tranny was rebuilt ~50k ago with no problems since). He shut the truck down and restarted and all was well again. Can anyone shine some light on this? I'm thinking a shift sensor in the steering column but I'm unfamiliar with the PSD setup.
Any suggestions much appreciated,
