I don't know of any shift sensor in the steering column.
Have the codes read by someone that has a Ford specific scan tool. The generic tools that auto parts stores use can't read Ford trans codes. The code that set when the OD light was flashing will stay in the computer's memory for about a month after the last time it flashed.
